The Truth About Pedophilia “The former child star, Corey Feldman, tells Vanity Fair, ‘I’ve had so much pain, so much anguish, and so much abuse in my life that most people probably would be dead. There’s so many times that I tried to kill myself as a child, so many times that I attempted suicide, so many times that I would sit there and wish and pray that somebody would just come by and knock me off. However, the signs of pedophilia are often hard to notice. “There is no definitive profile of a pedophile, as individual characteristics can vary significantly. Of those pedophiles that commit unlawful acts involving children, the perpetrator is much more likely to be a man (eighty to ninety percent) than a woman (ten to twenty percent)” (“Pedophilia”). Society does need to know general characteristics for pedophiles, so it can help prevent many attacks on children. “Some of the general characteristics are being popular with both children and adults, appearing to be trustworthy and respectable, preferring the company of children, singling out children who seem troubled and in need of attention, and finding different ways and places to be alone with children” (Ruggles). However, the majority of people who like and work with children are not pedophiles. It does mean that individuals should be more observant in their children’s lives. Individuals do not believe that pedophilia can anywhere amongst society. Society believes that “high” collar people could not possibly be a pedophile. Anyone can be a pedophile. So, knowing the signs of pedophilia will help decrease the assault on children.
“Pedophilia could be a byproduct of other psychiatric diseases; traumatic experiences in early life could have caused this development also. Some environmental factors should also be considered, such as sexual abuse. Why would an abused individual want to abuse another? Theorists have proposed that perhaps the pedophile either wants to identify with his abuser or conquer his feelings of powerlessness by becoming an abuser himself, or maybe the abuse itself is somehow imprinted on the psyche of the abused” (Stines). Pedophiles do believe that their behavior is normal, but hide it because it is not accepted by society.
