On the movie screen, it seems funny, rather inviting and maybe even normal. On social media, it’s simply a “rough night for Johnny,” that gets countless “likes” and comments, because it’s high school, or even just college. But for some, it’s the worst night of their life. It’s trips to the hospital, stomach pumping, bruises and cuts, humiliation across campus and in some cases death. These actions are classified as hazing, being an understudied, under discussed and underestimated social issue among many groups, including campuses, sports teams and even the military. Although schools and organizations across the country have differing rules and 44 states specifically created laws against hazing, the definition remains the same. According to Dictionary.com, the word “haze” means “to subject (freshmen, newcomers, etc.) to abusive or humiliating tricks and ridicule.” Many other websites go more in depth, saying it is a degrading series of actions that can put a person at physical and emotional risk, whether they willingly choose to participate or not. But if that number is so high, why is there not more information out there about hazing prevention? That is because 95% of students that are hazed do not report it, whether they believe they are honoring their club, because they do not think it is a big deal, or even because they are scared of the consequences. Regardless of the reasoning, the students who are hazed are not at fault for what happened to them, or for not speaking up. 36% of students claim there is “no one to tell about their situation,” while 27% state that campus resources and adults will not handle it properly.
