Argumentative Essay: 5 School Week Vs. Five Day School

Decent Essays
Recently, a few students in the Peetz 8th Grade class have done research to prove that a five day school week is better than a four day school week. Though, many people are in favor of a four day week, there are facts that a five day school week is more beneficial. Having school for five days a week can improve focus and grades, along with many other things. Studies do show that four days improve test scores. It has only helped 4th and 5th graders’ math scores. Not many children even take the state tests anymore and it only raised one subject’s score so it hasn’t made much of an impact. If I went back to my 5th grade year, I don’t think a math test score would affect me that much later in life.

The Mill Valley High School Board members should reject the proposed idea of a later school day because it is beneficial to students with after school activities such as sports and jobs. The idea that a later school day is beneficial towards students is preposterous because students with after school activities and jobs would need to be out of school at an earlier hour. Take John Sherwood’s testimony for example. He complains, “But it’s going to make football practice a nightmare. We won’t be able to be dressed and on the field until 4:45, and in October, it starts getting dark by 5:30...…

Ohio State University research “Year Round School Don't Boost Learning” has shown that students who go to school all year only show a 1% better than students who go for a shorter time. These numbers are so low that the benefits of all year school is not worth the extra money that would cost taxpayers. It's not the taxpayers who are paying the costs, families are affected most due to parents having to hire more caretakers or take days off to take care of their kids during breaks. Large studies by Penn State Harrisburg and North Carolina show that academic success comes down to the teacher's skill not the time spent in class. If a teacher doesn't teach well it doesn't matter how many days the students go to school due to the bad teacher.…

The over all results of having a four day week or a five day week are not really any different. In the article, "Top 7 Pros And Cons Of 4 Day School Weeks" research says "attendance of students enrolled in schools that have a four day week shows that attendance is improved as a result" which proves that students come to school most days because they are already getting an extra day to relax and do what they want over the weekend ("Top 7"). Some students enjoy learning and a longer school day would be beneficial to them overall.…
