In recent years vaccinations have been a hot topic in the news, on social media, on parenting blogs, and on nationally televised talk shows. The rate in parents choosing not to vaccinate their children is rising at an alarming rate. There have been celebrities speaking out about the dangers of vaccines, with no medical research or education to support their argument, which has led to this increase in unvaccinated children. With the higher number of unvaccinated children and immigrants from undeveloped countries coming to the United States, without the proper vaccinations, we are seeing an increase in diseases once thought to be eliminated in the United States. As recently as December 2014, there was an outbreak of measles that affected 169 people in twenty states. The outbreak was traced back to Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The first patients of this outbreak had all spent winter break at the park (Hensley, Scott. 08 May 2015.). Vaccines are not necessarily one-hundred percent effective. There are some people that are allergic to some of the ingredients found in the vaccines that are unable to receive them. Also children who are immunocompromised such as children undergoing chemotherapy and infants under the age of six months are unable to receive certain vaccinations. It is important for the health and wellbeing of these individuals that the community as a whole be responsible and protect those who are unable to be protected themselves against these devastating communicable diseases. With a majority of the population being vaccinated a “herd immunity” can be created, protecting everyone from these
