The good and the bad. First off the state of California tried to outlaw the sale of video games to minors in 2005. The proposal was shot down in the Supreme Court six years later (Jones). To put into perspective of this next part I need to tell you that 90% of children play video games in the U.S and between the ages 12-17 that number jumps up to 97% according to the APA (Scutti). It is very likely that growing out of this age group many people will continue to play video games throughout their adulthood. With all the recent shooting happening all around the U.S there’s no surprise that the President of the United States would have to address it. In his address he states that violent video games, movies, and media are to blame for all the shootings (Scutti). As well the APA and the American Academy of Pediatrics both stand firmly against children and teens playing video games (Scutti). Now for an example of how video games don’t have a negative effect. Chris Grady, a survivor of the Feb. 18th Stounmam Douglas High School shooting in Florida said, “I grew up playing video games… first-person shooter games, and I would never dream of taking the lives of any of my peers.”(Scutti). And finally for an example of how video games could have a negative effect. In Munich, Germany, an 18-year old gunman that killed nine people in July of 2016 and was a fan of FPS games, shows reports
