Videogames, they have had many controversies in the past years as having negative influences on the brain. Sure the effects of Grand Theft Auto, and Mario Kart might be completely different, but if so can either of them improve memory and problem solving skills? There have been many studies regarding the topic, yet there have been many different conclusions regarding the topic which has since sent the topic into controversy. Still the bigger question might be what genre of videogames improve memory and problem solving? There are many different genres in videogames as there are many different types of memory and problem solving skills, so do some genres affect some types of memory or problem solving skills, and other genres another? Will video games even have an effect on either subjects anyway? A study published in the “Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance” tested if action videogames improved working memory more than non-action games. The article quickly covered the connections between videogames and learning, and how they could help one’s learning ability in school.
