Skittles Commercial Essay

Did you know that Skittles were first made commercially in 1974 by a British company?

The commercial is targeting Caucasian teens, they are using more than one persuasive technique.

They are also using emotional appeal. In this commercial there's a teenage girl named Katie in her

bedroom. While her boyfriend (name not mentioned) is outside her bedroom window trying to get

her attention. Instead of throwing the cliche small stones through the window, he throws Skittles,

which is a brand of little colorful pieces of candy. Much like M&Ms but fruit flavored instead of

chocolate.

The ad focuses on the upper class Caucasian teen ( 13-18), Because they’re in a

top-notch house in the commercial (2 stories) and there are two Caucasian teens. They are using

two persuasive techniques Plain folks and Bandwagon. The reasoning behind using Plain

Folks, Because they are showing an ordinary family eating Skittles through the window. There’s

nothing unique about the family so more people and families can relate. They are

using the persuasive technique Bandwagon, Because they show a whole family eating Skittles. There

kind of implying that everyone will be eating Skittles soon get them before everyone else does. The

advertisers did this, Because in our society today teens are concerned about fitting in and being a

part of the group. The advertisers used emotional appeal, Because they show in the ad people

enjoying Skittles. Furthermore the Skittles commercial targets the middle, upper class Caucasian

Teen ( 13 +), they more than one persuasive techniques ( Plain folks and Bandwagon) and

emotional appeal.
