For most girls the largest struggle they faced entering first grade in the early nineties was whether or not to have bangs. For me it was the trip to the school nurse when the teacher realized I couldn't see the blackboard at the front of the class. After a call to my parents and a trip to the ophthalmologist it was determined I would need glasses or contacts to improve my vision. Thus began the great debate of my life, that continues up to this day, whether or not contacts or glasses are the better choice. Each choice has both advantages and disadvantages. Many people have differing results from each option and what works best for one person may not work best for another. There are several areas of comparison of these …show more content…
The average cost of a pair of normal eyeglasses can be anywhere between $70 and $450 depending on an individual’s vision impairment, whereas contacts have a cost range between $20 and $50 for a 1-3 months’ supply. Contacts must be replaced every week or month depending on the type to maintain eye health. Glasses rarely need to be replaced unless they become damaged or an individual’s prescription changes over time. Glasses can get misplaced or broken and replacing them can be costly and can take up to a week to replace on average which can cause lost wages or missed engagements if an individual cannot function normally without their glasses. On the other hand, even though contacts are also very easy to lose and can tear, most ophthalmologists keep contacts in stock and they can be picked up the same day. Even though glasses have a higher initial cost, contacts are generally the more expensive option in the long run considering they have to be replaced so often. With glasses, even with a prescription change, most of the time just the lenses can be replaced unless the frames are damaged or …show more content…
Contacts require daily maintenance of cleaning and soaking. Contacts must be checked often for tears and should never be worn if they are torn as this can cause eye irritation and injury. However, after cleaning and checking for tears, contacts are pretty much worry free throughout the day. Glasses are fairly maintenance-free over all, because they only need to be wiped off with a cleaning cloth every now and then if they get dirty or wet. Safety issues can be a concern with glasses in situations such as playing sports, because they could fall off or limit peripheral vision increasing the chance of becoming injured. Both have to be removed every night while sleeping. Sleeping in contacts can increase the chance of an eye infection and potentially damage the lenses. Whereas sleeping in glasses is unlikely to cause any harm, it can bend or break the
