Red herring- “A fallacy in which a deliberate distraction is used in an attempt to veer the listener away from the real question at hand” (Hardy, Foster & Zuniga y Postigo, 2015).
A character of “Bishop Aringarosa” in a Da Vinci Code is an example of a red herring throughout the manuscript. This character is portrayed in a way that the audience thinks he is the mastermind in the whole scheme in the church. It was not until later he was acquitted. Therefore, this instance of red herring in the manuscript distracts the audience from who the real bad guy is and adds mystery of the story. It turns out the Italian surname of the bishop “Aringarosa” translated in English as “red herring” (Literary Devices, 2016).
