There are many, especially from cultures other than the American culture, who believe we aren’t truly a globalized society. One of these theorists, Pankaj Ghemawat, believes that the world is only beginning to realize what true globalization means (Ghemawat). One of the leading points for this argument is that the majority of business that could be done across borders is still being done within the borders. Often times, developing countries or even undeveloped countries only receive business with wealthy countries if they have something to offer. A region that is a great example of this is the region of Africa. In Africa, the majority of the global business occurs in two countries, Nigeria and South Africa. Even during the new age of the Internet, we have established borders based on geography, language and distance. Internet-based companies are even having a difficult time globalizing. Google, for example, is having a very difficult time breaking into the Internet market in Russia; the majority of Russians would rather choose local providers above a global company (Ghemawat). The same principle is true across the globe. We would rather choose our local businesses than to venture to global companies because we like to remain in our safe zones.
It has been said that the theory that ‘economics is more important than politics’ is a dangerous belief to have when moving towards globalization. To some extent this is true. If the only reason we want to globalize is to make a profit, then the true benefits of globalization will never be reached. If we want to pursue globalization, we must be focused on helping the developing, undeveloped, and underdeveloped countries to grow as we grow. Perhaps it is time that we transcend the current assessment of globalization and strive for a more robust global
