According to drugfree.org, “Twenty-three million Americans are currently addicted to alcohol and/or other drugs. Only one in 10 of them (2.6 million) receives the treatment they need.” Before taking a look at what treatment options for drug addiction may be, let’s first figure out what drug addiction is. The definition of drug addiction is “A chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use” (Understanding Drug Abuse and Addiction). In addition, over time, the individual becomes dependent on those drugs and loses their self-control, hindering his/her ability to resist the instinct to take the drugs. It is said that “In the United States, more than 14,500 specialized drug treatment facilities provide counseling, behavioral therapy, medication, case management, and other types of services to persons with substance use disorders” (The Addiction Rehabilitation Process). While undergoing the rehabilitation process, addicts adhere to a twelve-step recovery format including steps like admitting they were powerless over alcohol and making the decision to put their lives in God’s hands. To make things easier, “Most addiction rehabilitation facilities offer family therapy as part of their program” (The Addiction Rehabilitation Process). Swanson mentions “50% of the general psychiatric patients also have a substance abuse disorder. That’s a harrowing 8.9 million adults, with only 7.4% receiving treatment for both conditions.” This means that the rest of the population that have both a mental disorder and a substance abuse disorder are either getting treatment for one disorder, or they are getting no treatment at all. Statistics also show that “37 percent of alcohol abusers and 53 percent of drug abusers have at least one serious mental illness” (Substance Abuse and Mental Disorders). Although the mental disease may not be the cause for substance abuse, there is certainly a correlation between the two. If the mental disease is treated, or at least depressed, the addiction may go away. This is not always effective though and most times addicts turn toward treatments previously
