Argument Against House Bill 2

Improved Essays
House Bill 2 was a law passed that bans citizens of North Carolina from using public bathrooms that do not match the sex on their birth certificate. The law went into effect eleven hours after being signed by Governor Pat McCrory, with no public input. Many people were affected throughout the United States due to this decision. This law is unfair to the LGBT community. Although, there are five different parts to HB2, my main focus is on part one which deals with bathroom usage based on biological sex.
House Bill 2 requires transgender people to use a bathroom they no longer identify with. This can make a transgender person feel unsafe and bullied by others in the restroom or locker room. Transgender males are still males, and transgender females are still females. Requiring them to use a bathroom they don't identify with would cause them to be targeted or picked out by others. In Charlotte, North Carolina, an order was passed that does not allow places of businesses to discriminate against people based on sexual orientation or gender identity. HB2 overrides this city ordinance. States

According to ABC11, “Our job is to keep every child safe, free of discrimination, Newell said. (ABC11).” A child may feel unwanted due to their choice of who they want to be. Maybe their identity is the only thing they can hold on to. People commit suicide from choosing what they want to be, then being bullied or judged for it. Thirty percent of the LGBT group attempt suicide near the age of fifteen, LGBT are two to six times more likely to suicide than heterosexuals. This is 2017, half of the world has nose jobs, breast implants, butt implants, facial tightening, yet we don't judge them for wanting to be different. Many cancellations in North Carolina have been brought up. Artist cancelling concerts, basketball and baseball championship games were cancelled. Having all of these cancellations has cost North Carolina billions of

Most bathroom bills that have recently been proposed aim to make sure trans people can only use public bathrooms that match the sex indicated in their birth certificate. This means that a trans woman who was born male will not be allowed to use a female bathroom in a mall or a restaurant. It might seem like too much trouble to go through in an effort to limit a trans person’s use of the bathroom, but…

HB2 is a bill that shows what the people in this country have been crying for has not yet happened. Transparency is still something the government refuses to give its citizens, but it is a basic right of the citizens. Over half the people in this state do not know what HB2 is really about. The only thing the Republican party wants us to know is the bathroom ban. This ban has been an embarrassment for North Carolina.…

As Lee Kleinman said “Senate Bill 6 is defiantly an attack on our long-standing position against discrimination," (Widomski). Further in the article talks how about seventy seven percent of voters approved in an amendment that would add “sexual orientation” and “gender identity and expression” to a list of employment protections (Wilonsky). At this point I was still confused about this law was even being carried out now since so many people voted but then I got to this quote from Dan Patrick saying "allowing men in women's restrooms is both mind-boggling and appalling." apparently after this him and republican Sen. Don Huffines launched a petition to “Keep Men Out Of Women’s Restroom.”…

The most severe of these bills is a bill from Florida “that would make it a misdemeanor for anyone to knowingly enter a bathroom that didn’t match the sex on their driver’s license or passport” (Steinmetz). This would affect numerous students and people in general who cannot change their gender on their official documents yet. One could get a misdemeanor just for using a public restroom facility. In addition to the Florida bill, “Republican state lawmakers are backing a bill that would require students in Kentucky to use the facilities that correspond to the sex listed on their birth certificate” and if this passes this means a student could sue for $2,500 if they encounter a student whose biological gender does not correspond with the restroom facility that they are using (Steinmetz). This is yet another bill that could fine a person, specifically students, for going to a restroom when students are the least likely to be able to change their gender on government…

Many who stand against the HB2 are the Millennials who have grown up during the LGBT movement. Community baths and pools have been utilized since ancient Roman times to promote unity and peace. Allowing a community to join together and reveal their intimate selfs, during their baths, advertised the importance of a safe environment within a society. These ancient community baths can now be viewed as the modern public restroom. Over the past five years, debate over whether transgenders should be allowed in public restrooms has been a topic of concern for the American people. Transgender is a term used to describe individuals who identify a different gender than the one they were born with.…
