Argument Against Designer Babies

Improved Essays
Would you like it if u were designed by someone?Would you like it if doctors messed with your traits? I would not like that at all. Why not accept them for who they are. I am against designer babies. It's wrong to design your baby. Why have a baby if you're just gonna tweak with their genes. Babies are not experiments. They are not created in a lab. You should not experiment with a life to make the better. You shouldn't mess with a life to meet YOUR expectations. Yes, its nice to see but maybe in the future, it may really get to you. Maybe you wanted your child to have blue eyes, and to look pretty, but maybe one day you wouldn't want them to have the traits you wanted for them in the past.

In the article “In Praise of Designer Babies” it says “Imagine you knew that you carried a gene for a debilitating illness. But doctors could go into your egg (or your spouse's) and remove that gene, enabling you to have a baby who, whatever other problems they might encounter through their lifetime, wouldn't have to worry about the illness.…

His claim is backed up by examples of epigenetics ans how its beneficial to society. Hayat 's purpose of the article is to let people in the science community and families know that research of something that is able to change the world is being…

Scientists have found a way to design an embryo before it’s born, but is this what we really want? In the science fiction short story, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, Charlie wanted to get an operation to be smart. The story goes along with parents wanting to change their child for their own benefit. Designer babies are unborn children who are being genetically modified to the parents ideal child. Humans should not tamper with nature because it is not guaranteed to work, the doctor could accidentally kill the embryo, and would potentially make a world where all the rich would look the same and the people who couldn’t afford it would have diseases or unique features.…

Scientists in today’s modern world have made immense progress in the field of genetic engineering. Many have rightfully chided scientists and this new development of errant technology due to the unethical consequences that genetic alteration of children brings. One of those consequences is that a society gap will arise from the manipulation of an embryo’s genes. It could go so far as what people call “designer babies,” which are “babies originated from embryos created by in-vitro fertilization (IVF).” (Pang) In short, you could select which traits and genes the baby carries in an attempt to further influence what traits the child would have as they grew up. Of course you could go too far down that route, customizing your child to the letter as our knowledge advances. It would be better to limit it to preventing inherited diseases and genetic defects, by utilizing recent gene editing tools by “active removal of disease gene[s] from carrier embryos.…

In fact, they think it is a better option for children and their parents. They can choose an embryo that is not going to be affected by a certain gene and then their child will not have a specific disease, but that does not make up for the fact that one of the embryos just gets thrown away. Also when someone changes the genes to avoid a disease there is always a possibility that the gene pools gets messed up. Overall, there are more cons in the situation than pros and “designer babies” are not worth the risk. Some people are not able to have children for medical reasons so they have to look into In Vitro Fertilization for further help, but “designer babies” are going farther than that.…

The question of “designer babies” is one that is fairly recent and controversy of the topic starts from the very definition of the term. When one is presented with the term “designer babies”, Most people imagine a genetically engineered being who is less human and more technology. This false stigma mainly comes from the negative reputation of Genetically modified species such as food or animals. However, the reality is quite different, it can be argued that even choosing a fertilised cell as an embryo during IVF is a form of a designer baby. After conducting a questionnaire; 86.76% of people believed a “designer baby” was a being which was genetically engineered to have selective traits.…

To begin with, the technology used is not one hundred percent safe, and the embryo could accidentally be destroyed during the procedure. Along with the dangers of the death of the embryo, designer babies could gain an unfair advantage in the society with the modification of genes to be more advantageous mentally and externally. This could also create societies between designer and non-designer babies. In reality, these groups are already shown between the rich and the poor; the procedure would not be cheap as well, which could also create problems. Although I do not agree with the use of this technology for these aesthetic purposes, it would most likely be used under the table; even if there was a law against…
