“Music does a lot of things for a lot of people. It’s transporting, for sure. It can take you right back, years back, to the very moment certain things happened in your life. It’s uplifting, it’s encouraging, it’s strengthening.” said Aretha Franklin, a woman who used her voice to support the small and major causes she believed in by following her drum. Aretha Franklin, while born in Memphis, Tennessee, was raised in the city of Detroit. Her father worked for a church and her mother moved away after a divorce. Aretha's father encouraged her to sing, even when she was a young girl her father would stand her on a chair to be seen from the pews when she sang in church. Even though she did protest alongside the Civil Rights Movement, she dealt with the behind-the-scenes, unseen, unrecognized parts. Paying salaries, or helping bail were all actions she never would have credited for, but still did. People were seriously helped by her support, and yet not many recognize her for her charity. Aretha Franklin used her platform to support in the hidden ways, she supported what she believed in, especially by funding. While Aretha has done a lot of good things, some of the best things that came from Aretha is the way she has inspired others through her actions. While Aretha did do a lot of Civil Rights, some of her most famous acts are for her support of women's rights. Franklin understood the power of her platform and used her voice for more than just belting out songs and entertaining audiences. She was a strong advocate for black women, in particular.
