One of the most influential tools that the human race has to offer is the calculator. The calculator is an asset that helps people perform various arithmetic functions such as addition or division. Over the years, the functionality and the apparel of the calculator have evolved over time. In fact, the history of the calculator can even date back before the years of 1900. Ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Middle East, and even Europe had their own variation of the calculator. In the book, The Universal History of Computing by Georges Ifrah, Ifrah notes evidence of artifacts from an ancient civilization that contains mathematical terms and expressions. Civilizations such as the Greeks and Egypt developed their own way of calculating mathematical problems, despite their limited functionality. For example, the Sumerians (c. 3300 BCE) used rocks to determine the number, such as if there was a small cone, it would represent the number one, while a larger cone would represent the number sixty. Eventually, the Sumerians will create a new method of calculation that will begin a new era of arithmetics. The invention will forever be known as the abacus. The abacus’ design will vary depending on the culture, but their …show more content…
The design and functionality of the Brunsviga calculator compared to the late abacus is like night and day. The Brunsviga was a mechanical calculator that came equipped with levers with digits on them, ranging from zero to nine and a pinwheel to scroll through the numbers. The inspiration to create the Brunsviga was to provide the consumers with a powerful machine that can perform advanced level arithmetic while providing portability as well. Around the time of the 1900s to the 1950s, corporations everywhere are striving for competition to see who can create the most optimal calculators for their

Part B Diagnostic Interview and Tutoring Sessions Permission was granted (Appendix A) to interview and tutor Athena*, who is a 9 year old student in Year 4 who returned to Australia in the middle of Year 3, after living in the United States for 5 years. The Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI) was conducted on a weekend afternoon at Athena’s home shortly after lunch (Australian Catholic University, 2011b). She did not seem to be nervous and was informed that the purpose of the questions was to help a pre-service teacher learn and develop some effective ways of teaching through the follow up tutoring sessions. Athena began the MAI confidently and could read, write (on the calculator) and order two digit numbers with ease.…

Leading the charge of Mayan innovation was mathematics. While the world recognizes the Arabic numerals, few notice that the Mayans developed a similar system without help from any outsider. The Mayans used placeholder digits, like Arabic numbers. However, these Mayan numbers had twenty as a base rather than ten, meaning every “zero” after a number would result in the first number being multiplied by twenty rather than ten (Doc C). Now, while this numerical system is indeed impressive for its intellectual skill, it is not impressive in the terms of scale or effort.…

The first computer that functioned similar to the modern computer we have today, was created around 1936 by a German man named Konrad Zuse. However, the Turing machine first proposed by Alan Turing became the foundation for our current computers we use today. Early computers were mostly used to solve complex mathematical problems such as assist encrypted code messages and binary math. These computers were enormous machines weighing several tons and essentially immovable. The modern computers we use today, had several overhauls in design and functionality; for example, with Xerox producing the first functional computer with a display and mouse, complete with windows, menus and icons in its operating system.…
