Wine And Beer Controversy

Great Essays
Would you like wine or beer with that? Such a simple question, how could it possibly relate to one’s political views? When thinking about what types of people drink wine, these characteristics come to mind: highly-educated, family-oriented, women. When I think about craft beer drinkers I think of a hardworking upper-class man. Whether you drink wine or beer doesn’t affect who you vote for directly, but indirectly it certainly does. We live in a country where men and whites tend to back the Republican, while women and ethnic minorities flock to the Democrat 's candidate (Kirk). From these facts, wine drinkers are more likely to vote for democrats and the beer drinkers are more likely to vote for republicans. While wine and beer may seem like …show more content…
A voter’s gender is a large factor in which party they will side with the most. In this year’s election gender has become a huge part of voting, considering we had our first woman candidate for president. Before the announcement of the POTUS, A Gallup tracking poll showed that Trump has a 70% disapproval rating amongst women (Milligan). The result of this poll is due to the fact that Trump has made some very controversial statements against women. Trump has called women “fat pigs”, slobs, and disgusting (Milligan). This example is just one of the many reasons why women do not support Trump. But this is not the only election as to where women do not support the republican candidate. Over the past decade women have supported the Democratic party because of their involvement in women’s reproductive rights, wage gap, and education. Although, having a woman candidate who is also the democratic representative boosts the women vote for this party. The projected votes for this election are that women will favor Clinton over Trump, 49% to 30% (Fingerhut). Clinton is favored among the women because Americans are more like to vote for someone who is like them, and women feel

Lisa McGirr’s book, The War on Alcohol: Prohibition and the Rise of the American State, argues that alcohol was a major part of the New Deal and previous scholarship concerning alcohol has marginalized the subject or emphasized the failure of Prohibition. Contrary to this scholarship, McGirr claims the opposite, “that beer took its place in the vanguard of New Deal measures” (xiii). Referring to the title of her book, McGirr convincingly proves that the war on alcohol was waged on African Americans, the immigrant population, and against poor white communities, most notably seen through the rise of the second Ku Klux Klan. While Prohibition was significant in leading to the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the very discrimination that…

The Drunkard’s Progress, as seen on the chart in Document 4, is a way to show the positives of the democratic belief that alcoholism isn’t acceptable for anyone. It shows that too many glasses of liquor will lead you to the grave, and real successful men do not consume any alcoholic beverages. This ideal was expanded by the American Temperance Society, which banned liquor, and was very popular throughout the…

Précis: In this article “Clinton, Trump and Sexism” Nicholas Kristof discusses how Hilary Clinton is an openly feminist running for president and that people like most about Hilary Clinton’s candidacy is her gender. Kristof also talks about how women are “reshaping” the public debate in good and healthy ways. For example, tax on tampons and other menstrual products. President Obama suggested there should not be a tax on tampons and if this issue this shows that women are impacting the conversation. Kristof also goes off by saying that female leader do not really focus on women's right but when Clinton was traveling as Secretary of State, she discussed issues such as domestic violence, human trafficking, equal pay and etc.…

Election Day 1920, millions of American women used their right to vote for the very first time. For almost 100 years many women fought to win that right. They have made speeches, signed petitions, and argued over and over again that women, like men, deserve all the rights and responsibilities that men have. For example Sojourner Truth’s Speech to the Ohio Women’s Conference. Sojourner Truth rose and delivered her short powerful speech citing beliefs of Christianity and using her strong, impressive presence to disprove the minister’s arguments.…

Temperance sharpened party lines and had a lasting impact on politics for years (p. 140). “In numerous local elections throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries alcohol mattered more than the national issues of the day (p. 140).” This level of focus on the issue demonstrates just how important the cause was to many Americans. The temperance movement was also supported by Abolitionist reformers. Abolitionists saw alcohol as both “a tool of slavery” and “its own form of slavery (p. 142).”…

“Knowing now I would never be alone again never lonely again as in those years God allowed me to be thus as if He did not exist forcing onto me the bitter knowledge that he did not exist in truth or if He did His existence touched in no way upon my own.” (Foxfire 45) While religion should serve as a guide for Maddy, it ultimately leads to her own alienation until she joins FOXFIRE. Napoleon, Aristotle, and Confucius all viewed women as useless creatures. Aristotle, for instance, once said “A proper wife should be as obedient as a slave.” The countless amount of sexist opinions that come out of powerful men have greatly affected the presence of females in political affairs and have gated their entrance into equality. Hillary Clinton challenges this idea in her speech, “Women’s Rights are Human Rights.” She believes women, of all backgrounds, should be able to exercise their basic human and legal rights and participate in political situations.…

The United States of America has a relatively shorter history than that of other nation-states; thus the brief history makes every reform pivotal in understanding the current state of the hegemon. In regards to the electoral reforms, the women’s suffrage movement, which resulted in their right to vote, is perhaps the most pivotal development in the country’s ongoing democratization process. Women constitute half of the American nation and excluding them from a democratic process such as voting is barbaric, malevolent, and unbeneficial to the state’s interest. Alexander Keyssar states, “Women were not believed to need the franchise because, in a gendered version “virtual representation,” their interests were defended by the men in their families,…

Domestic tranquility in the United States is outlined by the Constitution and can be better understood as the way in which society lives in harmony (Wilson). Unfortunately, society has not reached a state of tranquility yet. This can be traced to ideas of racism, sexism, and other means of discrimination in the United States. Although some strides have been made to try and counteract these modes of discrimination, society has recently taken a step back in its development towards a tranquil state. Specifically, the rhetoric used by Donald Trump has been linked to ideas of racism and sexism.…

Women’s rights have come a long way in the last century and still have a long way to come. Donald Trump is notorious for his incendiary comments and actions toward women, one such example of this occurred in his 1994 interview with ABC News: “I think that putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing. Unfortunately, after they're a star, the fun is over for me. It's like a creation process. It's almost like creating a building.…

While each of these issues can make it seem like the US is far from electing a female president, people have the power to change this and change the conversation surrounding female candidates. By ignoring the onslaught of arbitrary information about a candidate and by paying attention to their stance on the issues that matter, voters can then make educated decisions about a candidate. Additionally, when women are seen in all realms of society, they make their presence known, encouraging other women to enter male-dominated fields. In doing this, society cannot ignore the power that women hold and can work to alleviate the questions of qualifications that many female politicians face. Changing the ideological beliefs in society takes a great…

This time period caused many underground industries and illegal sale of alcohol (Novels). “it (Prohibition) had many negative economic effects, fostering a large black market of illicit alcohol producers and distributors, destroying the brewing and distilling industries, and reducing government revenue from taxation on alcohol” (Gale 1064). Prohibition itself caused illegal selling and manufacturing of alcohol, caused people to lose their jobs in the brewing and distilling industry, and made an impact in the government’s income concerning taxes. The Great Depression and other things led to the…
