Are you born evil, or are you naturally egood? The answer to this question is that neither are true. The major factors that directly impact who someone becomes is how, where, and who raised them. When a child develops, so does there brain until they’re about twenty-one years of age, so it’s important that every child should be given the best possible chances to succeed. The best way for a child to develop is to show them that they’re loved and cared about, keeping them safe, while also teaching them important life lessons. The unfortunate reality we currently live in is that society could care less about everyone, let alone a minority in a poor urban area with little to no opportunities. One theory that can explain this is the attachment theory. It states that an individual (Sophie) is emotionally attached to someone (Kas) through psychological means. Kas shows his love in times when Sophie is beaten, sick, or sometimes just randomly, which to Sophie is better than no one loving you at all. Research shows that “Specifically, women exposed to IPV with higher anxious attachment insecurity were more vulnerable to development of depressive symptoms relative to women with lower attachment anxiety. This may be explained by the proclivity to fear of abandonment and other dysfunctional attitudes common among those with anxious attachment” (Flair pg. 6). In Sophie’s case, the degrading and embarrassing acts associated with prostitution was enough for her to believe she actually didn’t matter in this world and wouldn’t even care if she died. Jenna (Sophie’s prostitute name) was victim to such a heinous crime and subject to such disturbing acts that her emotional state was disappearing along with Sophie herself.
