Are We Too Dependent On Digital Technology? Reminiscing to 20 years ago when our society was unquestionable and undisputable is a period that deserves recognition, because it is a reminder that we, as collectively can still remain creative and original without technology. Many years ago, in the modern day world there were not such things as “computers”. Lifestyle was undoubtedly unique and we enjoyed spending every second of it together as one; whether you were a kid, teen, adult, or a senior. Grouping solely existed when spending a free time with close friends and families or to accomplish a project or a task. We use it as a tool to remain connected with the world. We are lucky to be benefiting from such an innovation; however the youth in todays’ age are obsessed with the variety of applications and upgrades that are being created in all electronic devices. According to Chekwa Emmanue and Daniel Alana “As far as the youth of today, the cell phone is like an umbilical cord, they are attached and never without it. It can be used to track your every move…the towers.” The obsession and habits is posing a serious safety risks every time someone decides to check his or her text messages, emails, phone calls, or the rest of social media apps on the road while driving. According to the Radicati Group, “the number of global e-mail accounts was 3.3 billion in 2012 and is expected to increase to over 4.3 billion accounts by 2016”. Checking a single text message or an e-mail message can interfere how well an individual maintain their lives. Today, apparently delivering a text message online or checking social media posts are as important as our lives. Texting while driving can be as dangerous as driving while drunk. The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year. These statistics are outrageous because many live have been lost due to the inappropriate use of digital technologies. Furthermore the influence of digital technology and their addictions are widely taken to the classroom causing a distraction and disturbance. This innovation has also caused a distraction in students study habits. According to Lam Paul and Tong Aiden, “In terms of positive impacts, research revealed that the use of digital devices enhanced engagement and active learning, on the other hand, distraction is a major concern as students may use the technology for irrelevant purposes in class.” Other additional distractions
