Are Vaccines Helpful Or Harmful?

Improved Essays
Yes vaccines are helpful and yes doctors will probably never stop giving them, but are they really that great? Let’s find out.

Vaccines have been around for almost 200 years. That’s a pretty long time, but not all vaccines are safe and easy like you think. Sometimes vaccines can cause bad side effects that are harmful to the human body. The CDC (center for disease control) says all vaccines carry life-threatening allergic reactions in about 1 per million children. Some studies show that sometimes the vaccine is more dangerous and risky than the disease or sickness. For example, an article named Measles Vaccines Kill More People than Measles, CDC Data Proves, explains and shows how a measle vaccine harms a patient more than the measles itself.

“Should children have to be vaccinated to attend school?” (Lemons, 2016, p. 185). This statement is the prescriptive issue that Jane Fullerton Lemons, writer for the 2008 CQ Researcher posits in her report on “Vaccine Controversies.” In order to get both sides of the issue, Lemons obtained a testimony from Amy Pisani, Executive Director of Every Child By Two, and a rebuttal from Barbra L. Fisher, President of National Vaccine Information Center. Initially, my thought was to side with Fisher, but with further reading I 've concluded that Pisani had the stronger argument, despite the weaknesses given throughout.…

Pro-Vaccination Frames: Not Up for Debate: The Science Behind Vaccination argues that vaccines are not, in fact, associated with autism as proved by scientific evidence. The Science Behind Vaccination frame insists that the public should not be any more concerned by this topic of conversation than in the past. This article uses scientific studies to argue that vaccinations save lives of all children and the current vaccination schedule is crucial. While the author suggests many are still insisting research continue after haven continuously proved that vaccines are not associated with autism, another frame goes back to the Lancet study previously mentioned. “In fact, one of the few “studies” to find a link is still the original Lancet study, published by Wakefield et al.…

It is a long proven fact that vaccinations can save lives. Think of vaccinations as a protective barrier between a child and a debilitating disease. Vaccinations are able to protect children from diseases such as polio, which was a disease that had once been, according to the US Department of Health and Services, “America’s most-feared disease, causing death and paralysis across the country” (“Five”). There are countless other diseases that have been rendered less dangerous by vaccines. Smallpox, as discussed in the article, “How Vaccinations Save Lives,” is another devastating disease that once affected thousands of people.…

According to Beverly Ballarlo and Nancy Sprague, “Controversies over vaccine safety have raged for as long as vaccines have existed.” Vaccine safety has been a concern since the beginning of vaccines many years ago. Ballarlo and Sprague also state that, “vaccines may cause serious side effects or even prove fatal.” There are many side effects involved with vaccines that many people don’t know about. Also, many people don’t know that vaccines can actually be fatal.…

About 4,500 children may develop serious adverse effects involving life-threatening conditions, hospitalization, permanent disability, or death each year from vaccines ("Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System," n.d.). This a very high number of serious adverse effects per year. It is hard to understand that even with this number so high, discussion of the possible requirement of all children to have vaccines are in debate. Vaccines should not be required for children because the government should not have the power to force certain medical choices, the FDA, CDC, and pharmaceutical companies should not be trusted with the manufacturing and regulation of vaccines, and dangerous ingredients are contained in vaccines.…

It has come to the forefront of vaccination discussions that vaccines can cause serious side affects. Approximately one in every 1,000,000 children will suffer an allergic reaction to a vaccine. However, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 322 cases of childhood illness have been prevented by vaccines from 1994 to 2014. So, which piece of evidence weighs heavier? The lives saved by vaccines cannot simply be ignored.…

The primary topics that have been discussed in this paper include vaccine safety, side effects and toxicity, and the need for vaccinations for diseases that appear to be eradicated. The concerns that have been raised about vaccine safety and effectiveness have all been addressed and the overwhelming evidence has been provided (Achievements in Public Heath, 1999). However, despite this evidence, theories against vaccinations by social groups often misrepresent the scientific data and are not backed by scientific logic. These concerns have led many parents to decline the recommended vaccination of their children which had led to a resurgence of diseases such as measles and pertussis in the United States (Maglione et al, 2015).…

Vaccines are safe and there is no reason for people not to get them (¨Vaccines¨). Vaccines should be mandatory for children to go to school. Vaccines save millions of children's lives by preventing disease.…

Parents want what is best for their children to stay healthy and be shielded from avoidable diseases. Vaccines are the best way to do that (Immunization Action Coalition). Vaccinating children may come with various side effects, but it also protects others and saves lives from measles and other diseases. There are side effects and reactions that may happen to the patient, but nothing as extreme as the disease the vaccine is preventing.…
