First, high school sports are positive because it has proven to decrease dropout rates. Evidence that supports this is “Commitment to athletics are related to lower dropout rates and higher test scores” (Source 1). Meaning that students that are committed to sports are less likely to drop out and are more likely to receive higher test scores. This could lead into great work habits.

Evidence that supports this is “Sports that require high levels of performance can provide context where young people experience strong emotions, such as anger and anxiety. Youths report gaining insight into how to manage these emotions” (Source 7). This means that high school sports help students learn how to maintain and manage their strong emotions. Ultimately, high school sports help students in more than just their physical appearance.
Some would argue that sports cost the district a significant amount. Opponents support their reasons by claiming “as states and districts continue to slash education budgets, as more kids play on traveling teams…” (Source 2). However, with all the positive impacts high school sports have proven to show, this can easily outweigh the con of having high school sports, in fact, sports are worth every penny.
The most convincing reason why high school sports are beneficial is that they help students manage their strongest emotions. This is important because changing the emphasis on sports will result in more emotionally unstable students and future low-skilled employees. So I ask the school board to keep high school sports, for the sake of all the
