have an addiction called: the waking and sleeping phone habit. Daily, a typical smartphone user interacts with their phone an average of 85 times. Would you say this fact was accurate? In the article “Are Smartphones Making Us Stupid” by Christopher Bergland, the University of Texas at Austin performed two experiments. The first experiment, researchers required the participants to take a series of ‘mind’ tests. Therefore, they would need full concentration and cognitive capacity while completing these series of exams. There is always a catch. Researchers recommended keeping their phone on their desk, putting it in their pocket or personal bag, or they could place their phone in a separate room than they are testing in. Many people kept their phones in the same room; however, there were a few leaders that placed their phone in a separate room. After the exam, the researchers found out that the leaders that placed their phone in the different room performed much higher test scores than the followers that kept their phone next to them. The University of Texas at Austin concluded that there was a reason for the higher test scores. The participants that identified themselves as dependent smartphone users, did poorly on their cognitive test. Cristopher Berglund wrote that the smartphone users that placed their phone in the other room didn’t have the urge to look at their phone. However, the other users did and that’s why they failed their …show more content…
April Glaser and Kurt Wagner published about Facebook and the new technological features it’s going to display in the future. While on the other hand, Christopher Bergland wrote his article on how smartphones are challenging our social lives. One aspect everyone can agree on is that technology is taking control of the United States. Who would have thought that humans who have vision or hearing impairments could now communicate telepathically? Regina Dugan has already put this into perspective. She wants to eliminate keyboards and at some point, in the future, she’ll want to eliminate technology in general. You may think that Christopher Bergland, April Glaser, and Kurt Wagner are all trying to take away electronics, but they aren’t on the same page. Christopher wants to get rid of technology because he wants people to communicate with each other. He’s trying to increase our social skills, but April wants to decrease them. April’s inventing communication through ‘skin to skin’ contact. Therefore, our social skills would no longer be in the picture and since there will be no social skills, Christopher Bergland would disagree with Regina Dugan’s
