Are Smartphones Making People Stupid?
According to a 2014 report, students who didn't have smartphones scored 6.4 percent higher on tests than students who had smartphones. This shows that smartphones are making students dumber because smartphone users are scoring lower on tests. To add on, one aspect of this is the amount of Americans and teenagers that own a smartphone and that they rely on their smartphones a lot, making their lives easier. However, this could have a negative effect because people use the smartphone's features to their advantage and minimize the use of the brain. Currently, 64 percent of Americans and 85 percent of teenagers have smartphones, but most of them don't use smartphones for useful information. In 2004, more than 93 million selfies were posted everyday worldwide". This shows that Americans are getting dumber because smartphone users are using them for useless reasons and wasting precious time, which could be used doing a necessary task. For example, if someone gives someone their number, then instead of memorizing it, they just put it into their contacts lists. As a result, since many people get dumber by smartphones, they get lower test scores, make poor decisions, and make them less knowledgeable about the world around them. These effects could eventually influence and change their entire lives affecting their academic and social life along with their career.
