Everyday, people carry on with their lives knowing that there is both good and evil in the world. Some might distinguish the evil outweighing the good, while others spot the good outweighing the evil. Whichever side one might choose from this debate, it is natural that for humans to stop and wonder about humanity. A recurring controversy that crosses over a person's mind is whether humans are naturally and inherently good or, worse, they’re naturally and inherently evil. Society tends to lean on the idea that humans are selfish, in fact, 78% of the population believes others to be more selfish than they really are.…

These acts can range from crimes of cruelty, discrimination, slavery, murder, and other injustices against human rights. There is good and evil in all men and women. It’s in your hands in how you choose to believe, portray your actions, and determine which moral values you share. For someone to be called “evil”, there must be an ultimate good or moral standard to be compared too. You can’t make a comparison without a standard moral factor.…

There are many different ways to be evil. You can be evil by having a couple of thoughtless followers next to you and using comments to get things done your way like Regina George in the film “Mean Girls” by Tina Fey. Another way would be holding a huge knife and having a bunch of little boys at your side, as Jack in the novel “ The Lord of the Flies” by William Golding. Mean Girls is humorous with fights between high school girls. Lord of the Flies is serious with violence that go from hand fights to murders from boys that are alone on an uninhabited island.…

I disagree with Voltaire and Jones; I do not believe that people are naturally evil, or at least most people are not. I believe that people are weak, that they succumb to peer pressure, greed, and false promises. They do these horrible acts for the hope of acceptance or for bare necessity. All it takes is one bad apple to ruin the entire tree since the rest rot in its…

The short story “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson is about an old woman named Miss Strangeworth who is determined to rid “Strangeworth Town” of evil, yet she does not notice that she is causing evil herself. Although she seems like a proper, nice old lady, when she goes home every day, she writes cruel letters to the people in her town. Miss Strangeworth notices that everyone in the town is distressed and she wonders why. She refuses to acknowledge that she is truly evil herself. No one in that town would suspect her sending rude letters to everyone.…

The article “Good people do Bad Things” was written by Anne Trafton. This article explains that people don’t always act rationally when they’re in group settings rather than alone. Anne emphasizes that the brain acts differently because it is stuck in a “mob mentality”. She started studying this affect after she found herself on the other side of a hostile situation versus a large crowd. The author’s strategies are very effective as far as I can see; most all theories are backed by facts and statistics.…

“The Stranger” People's actions often heavily reflect the person's character and that is why in my opinion people and their actions are evil not just their behaviors.the quote “Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.” by Mahatma Gandhi is a good quote on how people's actions reflect character. In the book “ The Stranger “ Meursault is a great example of an evil person. In the first part of the book Meursault says “ Then I fired four more times at the motionless body where the bullets lodged without leaving a trace.”…

He believes himself to be “benevolent and good” (Shelley 87), but also thinks that “misery made [him] a fiend” (Shelley 87). In acknowledging that his lack of a father figure and guidance overpowered his inherent goodness, he acknowledges that his behavior is entirely learned from the world around him. The Creature shows such gentle views as admiration of the “gentle manner of the cottagers” (Shelley 100). In maintaining the claim of his own inherent purity, the Creature attempts to abscond the blame for his own actions, as he believes that it was the actions of others that spurred him to do evil unto the world. He blames those that treat him ill, and according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, blaming them is totally justified.…

“The majority of people can get seduced across the line of good and evil in a very short period of time … [;they] don’t want to accept the notion because it attacks our concept of the dignity of human nature” (Gino 3). The difference between good and evil is taught to be as simple as black and white; one is either a hero or a villain. In reality, the difference between the two is like trying to distinguish neon yellow from neon green.…

Some argue for the case of inherent goodness that because people feel empathy, inherent evil does not exist. Every species on earth expresses empathy in some capacity; animals commiserate with one another over loss, some even practice zoomorphism and take in another kind as their own. Psychologist Bruce Perry explains how evil can take root in someone who considers themselves empathetic, “‘You can have people who have a well-developed capacity for empathy, relating, who are very close to their friends, but who have been raised in an ideology that teaches them that people of another religion, color or ethnic group are bad’”(qtd in Begley). Some people in certain cultures and circumstances have grown up with or have adopted very provincial points…
