Many people think that Conformity is a black and white concept, with little room for interpretation. These people think that nonconformity is, or is not, another way of confirming, this is, quite simply, wrong. Even though there are many situations where people are conforming because they are nonconforming, there are times where someone is legitimately nonconforming. There are many factors that must be taken into consideration in this topic. Some societies and areas are based off of nonconformity or unorthodox thinking. Here in the bay area, the “be yourself” idea is pushed a great deal. In other regions, everyone but a few feels it's necessary to assimilate whatever trend is in. This just goes to show how many different factors go into this topic. To fully understand what nonconformism is, it is imperative we look at what the word means. Nonconformity is the act of not doing what the social norm is because you believe it will better you or your lifestyle in some way. Many people that call what they are doing nonconformity don't actually fit into this definition. …show more content…
As stated in the topics above, the society matters quite a bit because of multiple reasons. If a group of people don't conform to the social norm because they are in a group of people that act in that way, then they are conforming to the group. In a society that stresses that everyone should be themselves, they are all striving for the same goal which means they are conforming. The only time a person is not conforming is when a whole society is trying to be the same, but a few are thinking for themselves and doing things differently. This is because they believe in what they are doing not that a group tells them to be different. This goes back to the definition, they think for themselves, to make their life
