Are Myths, Folktales, and Fairy Tales relevant (or not) in our Society?
Myths, folktales, and fairy tales are definitely relevant in today's society. There are many things that have been based on these myths, folktales, and fairy tales. People, most of the time, just don’t notice it, but these myths, folktales, and fairytales have been around for so long, that they are kind of a tradition now. Myths sometimes show important lessons, such as jealousy, and that not all people are happy with what or who they are. Jealousy, wishes, hope, being free, being different, complaining: all of these are in myths, folktales, and fairy tales and in reality.
An example of one of the things listed above is being free. In lines 92-96 page 347, the Prince

In lines 23-24 it states,” They fell to arguing among themselves; the argument became a quarrel, and the quarrel grew more and more bitter…” This story tells that once the goddess, Eris, throws the golden apple the three other goddesses were almost “fighting” over the apple because it said, “to the fairest”. The goddesses each wanted the apple so badly because they each thought they were the fairest. The mortals at the party did not want to choose which one was the fairest because they knew that if they pick one then the other two would be frustrated with the mortals. So the goddesses decided to ask a mortal named Paris because he did not know who they are. The mortal picked aphrodite, the goddess of beauty. Anyway, the point of this story is that the goddesses would go through anything just to prove that they are the ones who deserve the best. People these days also can be selfish, with money, beauty, attention. Some people are also very “hypocritical”. In this poem/ parody the fact that people can be “hypocritical”. The Goddess Eris and the other three goddesses are pointing fingers at each other, but are doing exactly what they say is wrong, and same in our society, people blame others for doing wrong when really they are doing things just as

A guest in Helen’s husband’s house, Paris’s abduction of Helen, “a deed of unjust men,” violates two of the very principles the Greeks hold sacred – the sanctity of marriage, hospitality (Helen of Troy, 145, 152). Furthermore, Herodotus’s complete removal of gods in his interpretation of the myth places the full accountability of abducting Helen on Paris and not the gods; in Herodotus’s Histories, Paris kidnaps Helen for a wife after hearing of previous unpunished abductions of women – both Greek and Persian – instead of judging a beauty contest of three goddesses and choosing Aphrodite’s offer of Helen’s hand in marriage as he does in Homer’s traditional account. Herodotus thus places Paris at fault rather than Helen by shifting the focus from Helen’s transgression to the injustice done to her husband by another man, suggesting “that the fall of Troy was the god’s punishment of Paris” (Helen of Troy, 151; Myth, truth, and narrative in Herodotus…

At an early age of three years old, children are already aware of stereotypes against gender and ethnic of other individuals, and actually begin to internalize this starting in Kindergarten (“Stereotypes: Myth VS. Fact,”2009). In our society there are many ways that stereotypes can be carried out and they are formed by different sources for everyone. Currently, I am realizing that I have my own false accusations that I need to become more conscious about to improve myself and exclude the bias. A weird feature that we have is the ability to have concepts and ideas and adventures inside our brains that we can’t logically prove (“The Role of Mythology”). I think creation myths have more in common than expected. Although very different, there is always something connecting each myth together. Every culture has different sets of myths on how everything became how it is today. Most speak of a powerful essence with mighty powers beyond what humanity could ever dream of doing.…

In Hippolytus, free will is best defined as the power to choose your own course of action. Euripides explores a portion of human autonomy where we “know what’s good and recognize it”(Euripides 2001: 380) yet struggle to “accomplish it”(Euripides 2001: 381). That is to say, a struggle between different courses of action takes place and leads to a conflicted free will. Therefore, Euripides’ quotes can help shape the argument that free will, while strained by the actions of a god, is still functional. This paper will focus on how the motifs of arrogance and internal conflict establish an explanation for where responsibility for an action lies.…

Every culture has myths or fairy tales that they tell their children. Recently I have started to read the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales and have become fascinated with them. There are some many more fairy tales than the common ones like Hansel and Gretel or Rapunzel. The one thing that I like about The Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales are that they are dark and they depict the way things were in the early 1800s. The fairy tale that I choose to write about is The Juniper Tree, because after reading it I can immediately relate humans and culture to it.…

The stories of Greek mythology have had many interpretations and many meanings throughout the years. There are also many similarities and differences between stories from the past; Just like in the plays Bacchae and Hippolytus. Both Aphrodite and Dionysus' motivation and behaviors in the plays Bacchae (Dionysus) and Hippolytus (Aphrodite) were similar, in that, they both wanted to restore honor to their names and they used the family to teach the one who disrespected them to show respect to a god/goddess. But on the other hand, the human perceptions of these gods were far different from each other. First off, the motivation for both gods is very similar, they both wanted to make sure they were well respected among the mortals and that the…

Should fairy tales be read to children? This is a intriguing topic that is widely cogitated by people around the world, old and young. “The Case Against Fairytales” and “10 Reasons Why Kids need to Read Non-Disney Fairy Tales” by Arielle Schussler and Melissa Taylor respectively illustrate the negative and positive effects of fairy tales for children.
