In the article “Are Humans Hard-Wired for Racial Prejudice?” by Robert M. Sapolsky, the idea people being hard-wired for racial prejudice is explained by using examples of studies. An example of people developing ignorance by not accepting a person who is different from themselves is when the article includes a study done to people who are shown images of people either holding a gun or cellphone and the person has the choice of shooting the person. Later the text states,”When white participants (including police officers) were shown an African American, they tended to shoot faster and were more likely to mistake a cellphone for a gun.” This evidence suggests that people who do not accept others develop ignorance from past experiences and think that all people of a certain race are the same. This also shows that people, even though they believe that they do not discriminate, can discriminate just by seeing the person’s ethnicity, religion, and

In the short stories “What, of this Goldfish Would You Wish,” and “The Wife’s Story,” by Etgar Keret and Ursulu K. LeGuin, respectively, and the majority opinion by Justice Brennan, “Texas vs Johnson,” characters or people do not show acceptance of others who are different. In the story “Goldfish” a young boy named Yonatan starts making a documentary (by himself) in which he knocks on peoples doors and asks, “If you found a talking goldfish that granted you three wishes, what would you wish for,” and he records their responses. One day Yonatan knocks on the door of a paranoid Russian who actually has a magic goldfish. Scared that Yonatan will take his fish Sergei (the Russian) grabs a stove burner and hits Yonatan on the side of his head, cracking…

Explicit racial bias is difficult to measure in the contemporary society due to the social and political equality, therefore the alternative measure for implicit prejudice has become popular in the area of psychology. The validity of the implicit association test (IAT), is a tool designed to measure implicit prejudice, however it continues to be debated with many research producing conflicting results (Devine,2001;oslan & fazio,2003), however it is still used in many studies. The summary of Cognitive Costs of Exposure to Racial Prejudice by Salvatore, J and Shelton, N discuss about cognitive effects when a person is faced with racial prejudice. There are different types of prejudice mentioned in the article such as: White American’s who have experience with prejudice, and ethnic minorities’ experiences with prejudice. People who have experiences with prejudice do not think of them as a potential target group; however, when they experience the blatant prejudice, those people will be harder to accept the fact. On the other hand, ethnic minorities’ experience with prejudice will consider themselves as a target group for racial acts. In 1865 slavery in the United States of America ended, and since then the Black Community has been told to: get over it, move on, and, “leave the past in the past.” Since 1865 this country has taken steps toward making “improvements”; in the year 2008 we elected our first President with brown skin! Is that progress or what? Has the United States of America, the land of the free, home of the brave, and the place where all were created equal, left its race issues in the past? As much as we would like to keep our rose colored glasses on--the land of the free has not changed as much as one would hope since 1865.…

Prejudice is learned; it is not an innate characteristic that every child is born with. They learn it from ways in which they are socialized and what they imitate from the people who are constantly around them. According to Diana Kendall, symbolic interactionists believe that prejudice against any racial group is learned socially (Kendall, 2015). More often than not, when African Americans are mentioned in the media, it is usually in the association with a crime. When mentioned in the news…
