Americans have had the right to own handguns and other forms of fire arms since 1791, this right is guaranteed under the second amendment which state “A well- regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” However For some time now there has been a debate as to whether or not handguns for citizens should be legal or not, this debate has been increasing in controversy with recent events such as the school shootings at Columbine and the Virginia Tech Massacre. Fifty-five percent of Americans are in favor of banning assault weapons and fifty-eight percent of Americans agree on banning semi-automatic weapons. If we banned these weapons Americans could still keep their basic hand gun rights to help protect themselves, while protecting ourselves at the same time. Regulations such as banning certain types of fire-arms, requiring background checks at gun show sales, and preventing mentally ill from purchasing firearms, are all regulations that more than half Americans agree on. Enforcing these rules and regulations would not only help to protect our society but also allow Americans to keep their basic rights.
After enforcing stricter gun laws and regulations there would be no reason to completely ban the use of fire arms from the greater American citizens. There are many reason why gun rights should not be taken away from American citizens. First and foremost being that the right to bear arms is an American right given to us by our fore fathers. Taking away our rights to own fire arms is infringing upon our rights as American citizens, a right of the American people that has been upheld for hundreds of years. Americans should be educated on how to properly use and take care of a gun, and regulations and background checks should be in place to help protect the people. Crimes will not stop by banning fire arms, but America can decrease crimes greatly by simply creating stricter gun laws. The rights of Americans should not be taken away, and by making this compromise American will not only be safer but will also be able to keep their
