Are Gun Laws Good Or Bad

The gun is a glorious, but fearsome invention that has shaped human history. After the revolutionary war, the Founding Fathers created the laws of the country, including the right to bear arms. The second amendment has been in place for 200 years, but now the nation is quickly evolving. In the past few decades, the amount of homicides caused by guns dramatically increased. The government passed gun regulations, but it just stirred the controversy. Since many criminals use guns, people want to protect themselves with guns as well, whether it is in a private or public setting. This adds more fuel to the flames as many communities do not want an average citizen to be carrying a gun everywhere. There are also many unlicensed sellers who do not do background checks. This is because “under the Brady Law, only licensed gun sellers need to conduct a background check” (Vice 2006). Many gun shows will have these unlicensed sellers that will often advertise that “no background check is needed.” This is how gangs and the mentally ill acquire firearms. In 2013, “the CDC reported that 33,878 deaths resulted from firearms” (McCuistion 2016), but 21,175 were suicides. By strengthening the laws, it can prevent anyone with a mental illness from purchasing a gun. Current gun control also only punishes the criminals, but they do not often do anything to prevent it from happening in the first place as the NRA (National Rifle Association) does not differentiate punishment and prevention.
