Are Gmos Safe?

Lots of people die each year because to starvation and disease. Some scientists think that they have found a helpful tool to use for these problems, GMOs. The only problem is other scientist think that GMOs are not safe. In the 1990s GMOs, which stands for Genetically Modified Organisms, was discovered. Our genes make us who we are because they control our looks and the things that we do. By modifying genes we can change the way something looks, acts and what they do. Genetic modification is adding, taking away and changing our gene(s). GMOs could solve the world’s problems, or create new ones.

A common method for creating these medicines is the Vector Method, which includes modifying viruses. Scientist modify viruses by removing virulence, and replace it with genes from another organism. The new virus is then inserted into something in order to create the medicine. Scientist can now produce medicines for cancer, diabetes and many other harmful diseases. GMOs can help to make viruses and vaccines safe. In the future scientist hope to modify animals so their milk produces special medicines, and also so they can grow organs coated with the needed cells for people who need transplants. Believe it or not GMOs could and are saving many lives as we speak.

Although GMOs may be helping humans now, the future is unpredictable. Maybe all the “medicines” are just stalling and in 20 years it with double the dangers of cancer. GMOs have only been around since the 1990s’ so we don’t know what the effects will be in the long run. No one knows if GMOs might create new problems, that have new effects on human life. The point is the future of GMOs is unpredictable, so we could be dealing with the thing that will save mankind or harm it, even though most scientists are convinced that GMOs are
