The Electrifying Sides of the Debate on Electronic Cigarettes
With the strict regulations on smoking and tobacco comes the rise of the electronic cigarette. E-Cigarettes’ popularity has skyrocketed in its lifespan, with an increasing number of people using them. With them being put under the spotlight, there are many who question their effect. Many claim that electronic cigarettes’ purpose is to help smokers quit. They are supposed to be better for a person’s health than regular cigarettes. However, with it being so new there is not enough research to satisfy many people’s questions. There are two sides to this argument. In 2010, Boston University 's School of Public Health found that electronic cigarettes have a number of carcinogens over 1,000 times lower than regular cigarettes, and their toxicity levels were on par with that of nicotine replacements (Hemphill). So it is true that electronic cigarettes are far safer than regular cigarettes. However, just because something is safer, does not necessarily mean that it is safe. The main ingredient in most of the liquids in electronic cigarettes is nicotine. While nicotine is not as damaging as tobacco, it is just as addictive. There are people like Thomas A. Hemphill, an associate professor at the University of Michigan-Flint 's School of Management who claimed in 2015 that they should not be harshly regulated without significant scientific evidence that shows its effects. Or people such as Sally Satel, a psychiatrist and resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute who also believes that electronic cigarettes should be encouraged, so that people will stop smoking regular cigarettes. Neither side wants to fight the horrible addiction of smoking by endorsing another addiction just because it is considered safer. However, many of those who do support them claim if it has the same level of toxicity as nicotine replacements, which are given to heavy smoker to help them stop, then why not support them. If it helps people stop their smoking habits, which is something both sides want, then why not encourage them to smokers. However, as Christopher Wanjek, a health and science journalist, claimed in 2015, it is still too early to say if E-Cigarettes are a safe alternative to smoking.
