These cookies aren't the ones you eat they are “used to track users internet surfing, record their online purchases, and greet them by name when they visit a Website” says Patrick Cunningham the author of the article “Are Cookies Hazardous to Your Privacy?” He also tells us that “a cookie is a piece of information passed between an internet server and a user’s web browser.” In the magazine article “How Private is Your Private Life” the author Andrea Rock says “a web site may share its data with an ad network”(Line 102-103). Cookies can and will track what you do on your computer or personal device there are ways to prevent/avoid cookies. Cookies can be hazardous but not at the same time. When you go on a website cookies will track it and send it to ad companies so they can send you ads about maybe what you search or browse on a store website. They will send you things that they think will be of interest to you. When they do this they can obtain information about the user and his or her computer (Cunningham). …show more content…
If you turn them off you might not be able to access the web site or the things that you can do on that website. To turn them off the user should “ go to “preferences”, then open the “advanced” settings. In the “advanced” window, the user has a number of choices. The user can elect to “accept all cookies, accept all cookies that get sent back to originating server”, completely disable cookies or “warn me before accepting a cookie”. In the last case, the user will get a message asking if hr or she wants to accept a cookie whenever encountered.” (Cunningham). “But there are a variety of software packages available that can assist in preventing and purging unwanted cookies”

Harlan Coben, in the article “The Undercover Parent” (2008), explains how parents should install spyware on their children’s devices to monitor them and keep them safe from the dangers of the Internet. Coben supports his claim by first comparing first thoughts of spyware to Dick Cheney sitting in a dark room, looking suspicious and shady and then he provides scenarios of things that have happened to those kids who were not being monitored. The author’s purpose is to inform parents of the dangers of the internet and the benefits of monitoring their kids in order to try and convince them to install spyware and keep their children safe. Coben writes in an urgent tone for guardians to increase the seeming need to watch their child’s actions on the internet.…

Although deciding if you trust your child or not may seem trivial, it is in fact crucial in terms of today’s concerns over teenagers’ use of the internet. If you were a parent with teenage children, would you use spyware to monitor your child’s internet use? This is what many parents have chosen to do in order to watch what their children are doing on the internet. Many parents use it to protect their children from things like cyberbullying and pedophiles, while others use it to spy on them to find good gossip or to be overly involved in their children’s lives. The differences between the responsibly protective parent and the irresponsibly nosy parent are discussed in “The Undercover Parent” an article by Harlan Coben, and in this essay as well.…

With quickly advancing technology and programs, personal information and monitoring becomes more effortless everyday. When Orwell, created a dystopian society, he focused on the possible horrors of government and manipulation in the form of propaganda, however, he would be equally as horrified if he knew what corporations and agencies could track online today. Websites can adjust prices on websites, sell information, track what sites are visited and then adjust ads to increase the chances of a purchase being made. Within minutes of getting online, companies can track web history and can alter ads, more suited to the person browsing, thus making it more likely that the person would click on a link. He would compare this web tracking to the period…

In Harlan Coben’s article “The Undercover Parent”(2008), Coben suggests that parents should put spyware on their children’s devices. I strongly disagree with Coben’s argument. I think parents should let their children have independence when it comes to technology. Also, children should have the trust of their parents.…

This procedure can be quite noticeable because once you visit a site for example, Nike.com, and go to a site like Facebook, an ad for a Nike product will consistently appear. Though the method is used for website owners to monitor the vigor of their site, government has taken it to another level by using it as a highway into our thoughts. We use the internet every day, with blogs, vlogs (video blogs), and the highly trending use of social media. We put our positions, feelings, and thoughts online to share with the world. This makes us conscious of what we write and aware of whom reads it, but unconscious of the fact that everyone interprets things in different ways, and that someone can be a person watching for suspicious things said.…

Besides being a day to stuff our faces and fall asleep in the middle of the afternoon, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and give thanks for all of the wonderful things in your life. While it may be obvious that you should be thankful for your health, family, and that winning scratch-off you found in the parking lot (hey, 16 bucks is 16 bucks), you should also be thankful for your loyal customers who have been bringing you business for years. By taking the opportunity this Thanksgiving to thank your customers, you will not only make them feel good, you will more easily retain them. Remember, reselling to old customers is far easier than acquiring new ones (which typically costs more) and selling to them. A little thanks this holiday season will go a long way at keeping your loyal…
