13.4 to 16.5 million children are living in poverty today, many of those are being neglected, suffering from malnutrition, and exposed to many dangerous environments. The topic of how poverty affects children, and if it could be prevented has been a big controversy for many years. Should low-income families be allowed to have children? low-income couples should be cautious when having children because it can have tremendous consequences on them. Poverty affects everything from school to social skills and health, even happiness. A few of the impacts caused by poverty on children are: they are at a higher risk to get sick, they have less motivation to finish school, and the devastating emotional and physical abuse that could be received is terrible, often given by angry parents.
The cost of health care is very high and many groups of people have protested in hopes of making it free for everyone. “The most common reason for remaining uninsured was that the coverage was unaffordable.” (Garfield, Licata, Young 1) Insurance is expensive and many families can't afford it, “8 out of ten children under 18 do NOT have health care” (Epstein 3) which can lead to problems in an emergency. Deciding to become a parent is a tough choice, even more when you don't have the resources to provide that child with the life they deserve which is why low-income couples should not have children until they are sure they can support them. Not planning ahead could have terrible outcomes in many areas of the child’s life. Too many kids are suffering because of poverty and this is an issue that needs to be addressed, but meanwhile parents should be unselfish and responsible when deciding whether or not they want to bring a baby to suffer in this cold
