Are Athletes Paid Too Much Research

Great Essays
There are two sides to this argument; one side believes that athletes are being paid too much and are not worthy of being glorified as role models and an additional side where people believe athletes can be great role models and earn the money they receive. The following argument will give evidence of how athletes can be great role models and how they earn their money. The amount of money received by athletes is looked down upon, but being a professional athlete is not only a job, but also a career similar to what others would have in any other field of work. “Athletes put well over 40 hours a week of practice, study, workouts, and game time.”(Stein) Multiple people complain that pro ball players are not worth 25 million dollars per season, …show more content…
Many athletes were asked to think about themselves as role models and how they would affect the society around them. After thinking about this, more than 120 of those athletes started charities all for various beneficence (Steinburg). With athletes being seen on and off the fields due to news and television it can show that there are professional athletes that portray positive influences while playing their games with phenomenal teamwork and sportsmanship. Also, when they are away from the fields they are spotted doing good deeds such as visiting schools, visiting fans in hospitals, while creating charities and organizations to assist the ill and less fortunate beings (123helpme.com). “A superstar athlete can permeate that perceptual screen to deliver a message of inspiration and hope.”(Steinburg) Evidence shows that it’s reasonable for athletes to be glorified and paid as much as they are but it also suggests that they are unfairly paid and should not be seen as role …show more content…
This, understandably, can cause people to believe it is unfair. As for the issue on the glorification or seeing athletes as role models, athletes are human just like all of us. They can get into trouble with the law or they can even do good deeds like visiting ill fans in the hospital, so seeing athletes as role models could be seen in a suitable perspective or a perspective where people see athletes as unacceptable examples and imperfect people. From my research I came up with the understanding that athletes get paid the large amount of money due to the field of business they are in and though it seems unfair that professions that are needed in the world get paid a lot less than an athlete, it all has to do with what the business fields needs. The supply of doctors and teachers in the world are higher so they get paid less while professional athletes are harder to find and they also advertise for businesses and sell the tickets for their games so they naturally get more money. In my opinion, athletes are being paid accordingly to what field of business they are in. Though many will disagree, the facts I found in my research helped me understand the reason they are being paid so much. Along with the research about the pay of athletes, I found that there are

Some may agree, and most of them make a compelling point as to why they shouldn’t. Some of these points are because the athletes get paid already in scholarships and specific aids. As Rebecca Zissou states in the article, “Fair Play: Should College Athletes Get Paid?” "Many top players receive tuition, books, tutoring, housing, meals, clothing, elite coaching, medical care, travel expenses, and career counseling. " What she fails to mention is that most of these things that the athletes receive only cover a small portion of the actual whole cost of living and learning, and being sheltered, and traveling; the list could go on.…

That is one reason college athletes should get paid. Another reason college athletes should get paid is if they are getting paid that gives them more effort to try harder. When you try harder you play better and stronger. Also if they get paid for being athletes they will have money to pay for some of their student loans, book fees and also everything else they must pay for during college. I don’t think college athletes should get paid very much…

Professional athletes, especially NBA players are harshly criticized of their high salaries because many people feel what they do does not amount to what they are being paid. They feel NBA players aren’t contributing enough to be paid on that magnitude. Many people can’t stand that NBA players are paid millions while teachers, doctors, lawyers, or other professions are making nothing compared to them. Many strongly feel that NBA players do nothing more than play a ball game. However, there is a lot that NBA players do that people are unaware of.…

I am personally a collegiate athlete and knows what an athlete goes through. Players shouldn’t get paid millions of dollars like professional athletes, because why would players go on to try and play professionally. On the contrary they should deserve some type of revenue whether it's for clothes shopping, take someone out on a date, gas money, etc. For example that’s the same thing as me asking my friend to do something for me and he does all the work while I sit back and relax.…

Athletes getting paid to play has been discussed for long time now. College athletes feel as if they should be played to play since they are bringing in millions of dollars to the university. Some college athletes feel like they should be getting paid because they are the reason that the university is making millions of dollars, but the university doesn’t feel like they should pay them because they gave them a scholarship that covers the athlete’s tuition, housing and other things too through the whole four years they stay. That’s good and all, but how are the athletes going to get money for other things such as hanging out with friends. Some colleges don’t even let their athletes get jobs.…

Some people think that a free education is a big enough payment for the athletes because college costs a lot of money and a college degree is very important in life. On the other hand, some people believe that athletes should be paid extra money because of how much money is made from college sports because of them. Many people think it’s absolutely necessary to pay college athletes because the current scholarship does not completely cover the full cost of living in college and they’re being used to make a lot of money. Some players have to take the risk and leave college early in hopes of getting money to support themselves or…

The debate on whether college athletes should be rewarded for their dedication to sports through payment has many different arguments to it. Although some would argue that athletes do not deserve to be paid, it would be fair for them to receive compensation for their hard work. College athletes should be paid because they deserve it based on the amount of the work they put into their lifestyle, the college sports industry would be more than able to afford it, and it is immoral and possibly illegal to prevent the athletes from being paid. Critics to this idea argue that there are already enough advantages given for being a student-athlete such as: generous scholarships, exposure to future contract opportunities, and access to beneficial networks (Text 3, lines 23,26-28). This is not entirely accurate, however, because many athletes struggle with maintaining a stable financial situation.…

According to some, getting a full ride to a college isn’t enough. Many think that college athletes should be getting paid because their sport, is their job. Others think that getting a full ride to go to school is enough and college athletes get enough benefits as it is. College athletes may take an educational decline to support their team but these athletes have many tools for success that everyday students are having to pay for. College athletes shouldn’t be paid to play sports because many are already getting scholarships to help out the financial aspect of college, recruiting athletes would be even more based on having a powerhouse, wealthy school than it already is, and these athletes are given an opportunity to become professional athletes,…

“People complain that professional athletes get paid too much, but what they don’t understand is that we need a lot of money because we spend a lot of money,” is a quote from Patrick Ewing, a famous NBA star. His quote directly shows that athletes are being paid too much. For example athletes get paid a great deal more than the working class. They also get paid way more than surgeons, who save lives. There are also orphanages who barely make enough money to keep the kids safe.…
