Are Athletes Overpaid? Lebron James, a living basketball legend who makes slam dunks look as easy as hopscotch, had made a whooping total of $71 million last year, and there is a problem with that. Even though all professional athletes may not make nearly as much as Lebron James, most of them are at least around the $2 million to $5 million per year range, which is well above the average income for a family. Many people love going to games and watching their favorite sports teams or athletes compete against each other, and even though this is always fun to watch, many of these players are getting paid ridiculous sums of money just for simply playing a game. Many people argue that these athletes need salaries that will carry them past the 5 to 15 years they are able to play, which is why they not only work hard for their money, but also deserve the high paying salaries that they receive. Even though this may be true, many people see it as valuing entertainment over health and safety, especially since they could go on to lucrative jobs once they retire from their short athletic career. In conclusion, professional athletes make way too much money on average per year. It’s okay for these athletes to love their jobs and make a nice sum of money while they are doing it, since they are playing for our enjoyment, but do you think that they deserve to make around 50 times more than the rest of us who go to work everyday, too? Even though professional athletes put themselves through a lot of strain everyday, so does the rest of the working world and just because all careers may not be as short as that of an athlete’s, it doesn’t mean that the rest of the world doesn’t work just as hard for their
