Are Animals Feeling Restricted In The Book Animal Farm By George Orwell

In the story Animal Farm, the animals feel restricted by their owner, Mr. Jones. For example, The animals believe that their lives are, “misery and slavery: that is the plain truth,” (1). The animals feeling pain and misery shows that they feel oppressed and restricted. They feel that they have no rights and no choices, but instead the choices are made for them. The animals believe that they would rather feel pain trying to gain their freedom than to be held down by their owner. The animals feel the awful pain in their lives because of their owner, Mr. Jones. The animals begin to realize the problem that human beings have given them, saying that, “all the evils of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of human beings,” (3). Jones all social classes on the farm feel discontent. An example of this can be seen in Old Major’s speech. He tells other animals that, “No animal in England knows the meaning of happiness or leisure,” (7). These animals clearly feel outraged and frustrated on how Mr. Jones controls them if they say that no animal knows true happiness. It is clear the animals feel that they are being mistreated when Mr. Jones starves them and overworks them, only to kill them in the end. Not only do the animals feel unhappy and unsatisfied in their lives, but they feel that it is due to poor leadership by Mr. Jones. The animals believe that if they “Remove man from the scene” then the “root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished” (7). The animals realizing who causes them all of their pain, gives them reason to try and remove them, or overthrow them. Not only are all of the animals discontent with the life they live, but they know who has caused them so much pain, and they know they can overthrow humans. Basically, it is only a matter of time until the animals reach their last straw and revolt against the
