Arctic Ice Research Paper

It is no secret that the number one danger facing todays generation is climate change. There are constant sea levels rising, global average temperatures rising, acid content in rain is increasing, and the quality of the air we breathe is decreasing. With the increasing temperatures, it is starting to melt the majority of the ice caps on both poles. The arctic poles are decreasing at an alarming rate of 12% a decade. At this rate, we will no longer have any arctic poles by the end of the century. If this were to occur, global sea levels would rise by 230 feet. This would eat away at all the worlds coasts wiping away thousands of families homes. In general, sea ice is moderated by the sunlight. Like most ice it melts in the summer and refreezes during the winter. Most of the time during the winter it will grow to larger ice sheets. But in recent years this is not the case. Warm ocean currents move north from the equator causing warmer waters to travel to the arctic ice regions This makes it harder during the winter for ice sheets to freeze and form together. This has an adverse affect on the Earth itself. One of the primary functions of …show more content…
Why should we be concerned? There are many affects of melting sea ice that affects the majority of the Earth. One of the main impacts is what I stated before, the sea ice tends to reflect the sunlight. This causes a regulated temperature throughout the Earth. With the arctic ice sheets melting, less and less radiation is being reflected causing an increase in global temperature. There is also an affect of rising sea levels. One indirect affect of arctic sea is the melting of Greenland’s ice sheets. If all the arctic sea ice were to met it would of course increase global temperature. If these were to increase it would put all of Greenland’s ice sheets at risk of melting. If all of Greenland’s ice sheets were to melt it would cause global sea levels to raise about 20

From 1950-2004 the world was what scientists called the Mini Ice Age. this was after the medieval summer which was long warming period about 80 years prior. The Ice Age was expected to get worse leading into a long eternal winter but in the mid-90s scientists saw the earth getting warmer in alarming numbers and declared the Ice age over. A modern day ice age would probably mean death for life as we know it. Cars would become things of the past and safe food and water would be a dwindling life source.…

As global temperatures begin to warm, ice sheets and glaciers at either pole begin to melt, this melt water has dire effects to our ocean currents! First of all, water movement occurs in all our oceans and is key to our oceans success. This movement is driven by many factors such as wind and the Coriolis Effect, the major contributor to deep water movement is thermohaline circulation. Thermohaline circulation depends on the temperature and the salinity of the sea water; together these two variables dictate the density of sea water in a given location. More saline, cooler sea water is more compact, hence the water is more dense and will sink to the bottom below the warmer less saline sea water which will rise to the surface.…

Conversely, what survives continues to accumulate more ice, referred to as multiyear ice. As the National Snow & Ice Data Center (2013) reports, multiyear ice covers only 30 percent of the Arctic Ocean, as opposed to the historic 60 percent. The oldest ice was reported at 5 percent in 2013, which has dramatically reduced from the 25 percent recorded in the 1980’s (National Snow & Ice Data Center, 2013). The National Snow & Ice Data Center (2013) also reports that the thickest Arctic ice along the coast of Greenland has thinned due to warming trends with extended periods of the AO negative…

Its causing sea levels to rise through the melting of ice caps and glaciers. The rising sea levels obviously presents a threat to us humans as it can lead to flooding, contaminated drinking water, and interference with farming (Business Insider). But it also presents a problem for our wildlife. Polar bears are starving as the fish they survive on are dying due to the rising temperature. Animals that live on beaches will either be washed away by immense flooding, or die of dehydration from extreme droughts.…

Scientists say that 32% of the ice has melted since 1960, and if this trend continues, there will be a period of time in the year where there is no ice in the passage. Shipping companies will be able to use this to their advantage, and ships that are too big to fit through smaller canals can cut 1000s of kilometers off of their journey. This will not only save valuable time for commercial shippers, but also money considering they will not need as much fuel to complete their journey. By having a safe route through the Arctic ships traveling between Tokyo and London will have a passage that is around 7000 km shorter. Not only is this a positive for imports, but in the future resources that are found in the Arctic will be able to be shipped out straight from the North.…

In recent years, there have been notable changes in the annual ice accumulation patterns all over the world. Most importantly there has been a focus on Greenland with respect to its glaciers and their impact on sea-level rise. It has been found in several studies that Greenland is seeing faster than typical rates of warming and thus glacial melting than most any other place on earth (Bekryaev, 2010). Given the significant volume of ice held within glaciers on Greenland, there is a hugely significant volume of water that should be concerning for the population the world over should it begin to make its way into the oceans. Not only is the melting of the ice sheet concerning regarding raw sea-level, but the dumping of large amounts of the freshwater glaciers into the ocean could severely upset the thermohaline circulation in the North Atlantic Ocean, with devastating effects.…

According to the article “Jet Set; Climate Change”, “the upper layers of parts of the Arctic Ocean are hotter than they have been for at least 2,000 years” (68). There is less oxygen as the water gets warmer. As a result, the animals that live at the top of the ocean zone will have to swim deeper to keep cool. This will disrupt habitats and also the food chain. An example of a food chain affected is phytoplankton.…

Global warming has many effects on the ocean. It affects much of the ocean 's ecosystems and living organisms. The increase in the earth 's temperature has led to coral bleaching which results in shrinking, starvation, and death of corals that support thousands of species that live on coral reefs. It has also resulted in the migration of many fish species. Many have migrated toward the poles as the ice melts as more food and shelter becomes available which could be a problem as they could be a food source for another…

The water from the melting ice caps causes ocean levels to rise and over the years it has risen little by little inch by inch. The rising oceans causes flooding in coastal cities and factory’s displacing people from their homes and jobs. Not only is the ocean rising but marshes and coastal plains have seen an increase of water rising. Places far away from ice caps are affected by this too “In Bangladesh over one million people have been displaced due to rising rivers and seas” (Hohensee). This also affects shipping having chunks of ice in the ocean from the caps preventing ships from easily getting from one place to another.…
