Integrals have been around for hundreds of years and have been used in several ways to solve complicated math problems. An integral is a function that expresses the area under the curve of a graph of a function. The first time the technique was brought forward was by a greek astronomer Eudoxus in the 370 BC. He used the technique called as the method of exhaustion which helped him find area or volume. The way he achieved this was using infinite numbers of division. Later Archimedes came along in the 3rd century BC and used the method of exhaustion to find the area of parabolas and even the area of a circle. Cavalier came later on and found the Cavalier quadrature formula but by the most recent evolution of integrals because the fundamental …show more content…

He helped developed differential and integrals calculus along with Newton. Leibniz was born on july 1st 1646. He was the one who discovered the coefficients of systems of linear equations. Leibniz also has a important formula for pi. The formula concludes that 1 - ⅓ +⅕ - 1/7 + = Pi/4. Leibniz was so smart and discovered many thing. He was known to be the first computer scientist due to his binary numeral system. Besides the main founders there are also some not as famous people who helped find the area of circle in the 3rd century. This person was known as Liu Hui from china. He used this method to find the volume of a sphere but did not make it into the books

Euclid, a very famous mathematician, composed a book of his findings called Elements. This book was written in about 300 B.C.E. and his ideas were a starting point in the field of geometry, which is studied around the world today. One of the many theorems in this book was "If two straight lines cut one another, the vertical, or opposite, angles shall be equal" (Document 5). Another famous mathematician named Pythagoras has also donated many ideas into the mathematics of geometry. One of his most famous theorems includes the Pythagorean Theorem.…

Well, with the differences between the dates of the discovery and publications had led the “mathematical community” (fitchburgstate 1), to start questioning as whether or not Liebniz had actually made the discovery or if he had plagiarized Newton’s ideas and included them with his own notation. Those who were involved started realizing that the new branch of math (calculus) was at stake so; England and Germany wanted their country to get the credit for it. After a while they ended up in court over the controversy and therefore, they looked into the…

Newton's mathematical genius had been stimulated in his early years at Cambridge by his work under Barrow, which included a thorough grounding in Greek mathematics as well as in the recent work of René Descartes and of John Wallis. During his undergraduate years Newton had discovered what is known as the binomial theorem; invention of the calculus had followed. (Encyclopedia of World Biography. Gale, 2004.) Mathematical questions had been treated at length in correspondence with scientists in England and abroad; and Newton’s contributions to optics and celestial mechanics could be said to be his mathematical formulation of their principles.…

His largest contribution to science may be Boyle’s law, but his smaller contributions such as the vacuum and how different waves move through a vacuum are still large enough to carry weight in modern science. For example, the vacuum has been remade to be better and better until it has reached the point where it can be used to isolate different compounds and elements to see how they react independently. One use could be mixing Nitrogen gas and Oxygen gas together independent of other particles that could be present in the air because the vacuum has removed them. This has led to more accurate recordings and therefore cut the error down on larger projects which creates a more productive and cost efficient project. His practices and advancements have blossomed into the foundations of modern science and lead to the concept that “the world could be understood through mathematics” (Famous Scientists)…
