Hobbits, wizards, goblins, and more all are creatures you get in the action-packed novel by J.R.R. Tolkien called, The Hobbit. This book took the world by storm, amassed hundreds of fans, and reshaped literatures standards. With amazing characters, beautiful descriptions of scenery, and helpful, detailed drawings, this book takes the ready on the journey of 15. Each character has different personality traits, and with some, the reader can distinctly tell who the novel’s heros and villans are. Certain characters in the novel, represent different archetypes in The Hero’s Journey. In the page of The Hobbit, Gandalf represent the Threshold Guardian, Thorin represents the Shapeshifter, and the goblins represent the shadow, due to how their personalities

“‘He’ll be eaten if we don’t do something,’ said Thorin, for there were howls all around them now, getting nearer and nearer. ’Dori!’ he called for Dori the lowest down on the easiest tree, ’be quick and give Mr. Baggins a hand up,’”(The Hobbit, page 110). At this point in the story, Thorin came to Bilbo’s aid, showing the reader, that he cares for him. “‘I shall,’said Thorin,’ and you will come with me, and Fili and Balin. That’s as many as the boat will hold at a time. After that Kili nd Oin and Gloin and Dori, next Ori and Nori, Bifur and Bofur; and last Dwalin and Bombur,’”(The Hobbit, page 157). Here, Thorin acted as a confident, fearless, leader by offering to go first and by giving orders. Plus, he showed them that he’s loyal to their cause. “‘You! You!’, cried Thorin, turning upon him and grasping him with both hands.’ You miserable hobbit! You undersized-burglar!’ he shouted at a loss for words, and he shook poor Bilbo like a rabbit,”(The Hobbit, page 297). That’s where Thorin began showing his true colors, by revealing that he only cares about the Arkenstone.
