At this point in the story, Thorin came to Bilbo’s aid, showing the reader, that he cares for him. “‘I shall,’said Thorin,’ and you will come with me, and Fili and Balin. That’s as many as the boat will hold at a time. After that Kili nd Oin and Gloin and Dori, next Ori and Nori, Bifur and Bofur; and last Dwalin and Bombur,’”(The Hobbit, page 157). Here, Thorin acted as a confident, fearless, leader by offering to go first and by giving orders. Plus, he showed them that he’s loyal to their cause. “‘You! You!’, cried Thorin, turning upon him and grasping him with both hands.’ You miserable hobbit! You undersized-burglar!’ he shouted at a loss for words, and he shook poor Bilbo like a rabbit,”(The Hobbit, page 297). Tolkien’s novel the reader can tell that Gandalf is most definitely the Threshold Guardian; during most of the adventure, he tries to get the dwarves to believe that Bilbo is worthy of joining their party. Through multiple pieces of evidence, the reader is lead to believe that Thorin is the Shapeshifter in the story such how he goes from Bilbo’s friend, to his leader to his enemy. Since they represent, do and speak of grim and vile acts, the goblins are seen as The Shadow in the story. A Threshold Guardian is someone who tests the hero to prove their valor, and Gandalf uses Bilbo’s successes as a way of providing evidence of how Bilbo is worthy enough to join Thorin and company.When he mislead Bilbo by turning from his friend to his foe, and creates suspense towards the end of the book, making him The Shapeshifter in The Hobbit. By representing the darkest attributes and symbolizing our greatest fears and phobias, the goblins make themselves known as The Shadow in this Hero’s Journey.
