Archetypes In The Brother Grimm's Snow White

Composers use their archetypes to represent the best and worst of society’s values

Fairy tale archetypes are subtly used by composers to highlight the values of society in a certain era. Women's role in society and the villainesses holding curse are all explored by different composers in order to inform audiences of the good and bad of society’s values. The Brother Grimm's classic novella Snow White (SWGB), was written in 1800s Germany, the fairy tale focusing heavily on being virtuous and pure. Matt Phelan's graphic Snow White (SWMP) (2016) is set in a 1920s, New Yorker context, to correspond with today's environment, highlighting the materialistic views and the start of the push for equality. Even though feminism has changed some of the gender roles, women still have similar expectations set upon them by society that of being beautiful and kind will aid them in their life's journey. In the Grimm brothers story, Snow White has just been discovered by the seven dwarves who have just came home, instead of being angry at her for breaking in, they " let the light fall on her" to see her beauty. The light imagery used to describe snow white is repeated throughout the text, conveying the pure and virtuous nature of the child. Corresponding to the 1800s, natural beauty is held in higher regard than fake or wicked beauty such of that of the wicked queen, because authenticity was more important than falsity. Snow white's character however does not seem to have much depth. A feminist interpretation of the text may highlight how the heroine (snow white) may well be in tune with the era however she is very two dimensional and naïve, the dangers of this being she can get abused by others easily . Making the same mistakes over and over, "Snow white felt a craving for the beautiful apple" the connotations of craving illustrates her extreme lust for the apple. Giving in to the temptation of the witch. Snow white in Matt Phelan's novel has similar qualities. Such as …show more content…
Light is illuminating off of her body in vector lines drawing the audience’s audience to her, this contrasted to the dark outside world with faceless male figures illustrates this concept of her being the symbol of purity and good. This corresponds with the similar ideas in the Grimm brother’s interpretation, with light falling on her in a similar way. Highlighting the nature of society to value beauty and purity in the context. In the context of today however, purity is not as morally sound as it was although beauty, still remains a common factor that most people strive toward. Snow white is seen as less timid and shy in the graphic novel although the standards of the surrounding world in the 1920s remain the same: the pressure on women to be beautiful creatures. Tangled has a myriad of similar concepts, although the story focuses more on the empowerment of women more than the other two texts. Light, is also used as a visual to provide the audiences with an insight to her character. The medium shot of Rapunzel when she is seen by Eugene for the first time, once again has lines of light falling onto her, she also is portrayed as being very bright

This ideal also ties to the concept of beauty having its consequence in this case the consequence is it has become an imprisonment for both women. They both, however, surpass this imprisonment Snow White by becoming conscious and not a corpse in the glass coffin and the princess being discovered by the prince. The imprisonment which both captivated them has allowed them to prosper and be strong. They surpassed this imprisonment they had to the patriarchal society; yet in…

Fairytales’, being around for several generations, have evolved through time and caught the attention of many folklorists, and demands an explanation of how feminism plays an essential role in today 's culture. Folklorist and author, James Poniewozik wrote, “The Princess Paradox” to raise an attempt to explain the “girls-kick-ass culture” (323). Peggy Orenstein published, “Cinderella and the Princess Culture” to examine and identify the belief of feminism within fairytales. Even though two different authors studied and evaluated the same topic, being feminism in fairytales, their approaches and conclusions on the topic tend to differentiate slightly, but also come to an agreeance in other areas.…

“An archetype provides a window into a society’s attitudes and values” Throughout history, the purpose of fairy tales has shifted from pure male entertainment to didactic children's tales. A particular time period's values are evident through analysis of archetypes found in fairy tales from that era. This theory is explored through the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (SWSD) originally published in 1812, Matt Phelan's film noir style graphic novel "Snow White" published in 2016 but set in the 1920s, and Robert Stromberg's modern appropriation of Sleeping Beauty, the feature film "Maleficent" released in 2015. In each of these texts, the archetypes of the villain and heroine have shifted in order to adapt to the changes…

They endure the challenged their stories face along with the societal changes they’ve endured. This essay has discussed the historic gender rolls women have been portrayed in the starting of fairytales, how it has changed, to how beauty still plays a crucial part to this day to storytelling in fairytales. It is interesting to see how far the tales have gone, and many questions arise to where they will go in the future. It is clear to see that fairytales are products of their time, and that with each change the world faces as do the stories being told. Seeing they play such a critical part in society and in the development in children it would be interesting to see if they will not just mirror how the world is around them but influence how the world should be and become a great influence on bettering the imagery of women.…

Disney films are portraying their characters beautiful to set impossible standards of beauty. Snow White and the seven dwarfs by Walt Disney promotes impossible standards as well as other films. Issues with with Disney films promoting impossible standards of beauty are that when kids see these beautiful princesses and princes they want to be just as beautiful like them. The other side of this argument would be that Disney movies do not promote impossible standards of beauty. There are three arguments with strong evidence to show there are impossible standards of beauty in Disney films.…

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm was popularly known as the “Grimms Brothers”, were characterized as one of the most dramatic writers in the 19th century. They were categorized by their short, simple sentences, colloquial language, and their well-organized approach to craft writings. Their writing was entitled Little Snow White, it was released in 1937 and it was about Snow White, a princess who falls into a deep, death-like rest after taking a bite from a poisoned apple. My impression about this narrative was an innocent little girl who had her step-mother hating her because of her beauty and kind-heart. The Little Snow-White by the Grimms Brothers is a fairy tale that reveals the goodness and the beauty of a little princess who is loved by all, however,…

Throughout time, women have encountered massive discrimination from a shortage of lawful rights and extremely small independence from men. In many modern countries such as Syria, Yemen, North Korea, and many more, women are still perceived as less than fully human. The United States has been fighting for women’s rights since the 19th century, but the results have always revealed men as the masculine and dominant ones. One can see the lack of power for women constantly appearing in literature, fiction, and entertainment. The inequality and anti-feminism for women can even be found in children’s fairy tales.…

According to Abler (2008) from her article “The Moral of the Story,” fairy tales with infinite variations have existed throughout history and the world. They usually convey moral, social or political lessons through skillful narrative and interesting characters. However, today’s standard for fairy tales worldwide is based on full-length animated movies. The deeper meanings and lessons, as well as the moralistic revisions of some of the earlier versions are often forgotten—shifting from supporting biblical values and principles to relative self-sufficiency and morality. The longevity of fairytales rely on its ability to address tabooed subjects in a symbolic manner (Incest in Indo-European Folktales, 1997), however, these seemingly harmless tales have come from darker stories that involve themes considered evil by the masses such as adultery, incest, cannibalism, rape, murder, mutilation, stereotypes, and whatnot.…

    Femininity In Beowulf

In medieval works such as Le Morte Darthur, Beowulf, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and The Book of Margery Kempe, it is clear that the social restrains represented in the literatures that were imposed on women had undergone a drastic change through time. Since Grendel offers an alternative view on the epic poem of Beowulf by narrating through the eyes of the “monster”, its portrayal of women’s role in society should be a reflection of the social system during the middle age. During the early period, women’s roles were very mundane and they were not given much responsibility beyond the confines of their home. As time goes on, however, the female role progressively became more prominent as women learned to be more opinionated and began to…
