Archetypes In Remember The Titans

In a quote from Bud Harris, he compares individuation to a “...caterpillar becoming a butterfly over and over again.” (Harris). In other words, individuation is embracing the fact that you will change and fully transform throughout your life. Some of the traits that are repressed and kept in your collective unconsciousness will appear in your personality at some point*. Throughout the process of individuation, there are concepts called archetypes. Archetypes are common patterns that come from the collective unconscious and are shown symbolically in dreams and myths (Fontana). Three archetypes that are often seen are the ego, shadow, and the Self. These archetypes are shown in various films, and the movie Remember the Titans is no exception. In the individuation process, its purpose is to filter what goes in and comes out of the unconsciousness. Your ego is what makes you different from other people. In the movie, this is shown through Coach Boone. He is the head coach of the Titans. Not only does he act as the head coach, but he acts as the mediator of all the commotion going on in the town. Before the integration of the high school, everyone in that town had a “live and breath football” mentality. After the school allowed african american students, it divided not only the football team, but the entirety of the town as well. Coach Boone acted as the ego because throughout all of the hate he got from students and parents, he did not let that change the way he did things. If people did not agree with what he was doing, they were encouraged to leave. The ego is known to give identity to people (The Individuation Process). Similar to the ego, Coach Boone does the same to his team. Although people did not like the way he did things because he changed the tradition that everyone knew, he created new traditions and made the team his own.
