check tense For many millions of years, authors have been enchanting audiences with wonderful stories of adventure, mystery, love, and murder. All of these stories have one thing in common: a dynamic character. The best part of any book is having a fully developed and dynamic character. One of the many ways authors can develop their characters is by using archetypes. Archetypes have been around for many thousands of years, first defined by C. G. Jung (Jane and El-Shamy XVI). They can be found in just about any form of literature, from books to movies, to mythology (Jane and El-Shamy XVI). Archetypes come in many different forms from simple to extremely complex. For example, the archetype good can be used in the general sense or broken down into lawful good to neutral good to chaotic good, each one becoming more and more complex (Basic Archetypes; Good vs Evil n.p.). Often times characters can display more than one archetype and while being able to represent both, one type of archetype will be more dominantly displayed (Schmidt 37). A British archetype used most commonly is the theme of good vs evil. Many British authors used this archetype brilliantly, leading their books to become classics.

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the theme of this archetype is very prevalent as in the fact that you can see the good characters acting morally, whole-heartedly, and heroically; the evil characters act immorally, irrationally, and only for the benefit of themselves.
