Archetypes are essential and they shape up every story. They are the typical characters, symbols, or situations that are seen over and over again in many pieces of literature, they are a universal language. An archetype is something that is implanted in the human social unconscious. The usage of archetypes by writers allow readers to feel instantly connected to the stories, which is why writers continue to use them. The archetypes: heroes, damsels in distress and the devil figures are all present in the three stories, Clash of the Titans, Little Snow-White and Rapunzel.

Perseus is a fisherman who has little to none experience in fighting, he however, overcomes all the obstacles, slays the monsters and saves the princess from Hades without using his powers as a demigod, and is considered to be the hero of the movie. In Rapunzel the hero of the story is the prince, but his motives make him a different kind of hero. This prince fits the archetype of a lover, because his love and determination to be with Rapunzel is what motivates him and make him a hero. The two heroes share many similarities such as how they never give up no matter how difficult their journey is and how determined they are to their goals. Perseus is determined to save Andromeda and take revenge upon the gods for what they did to his parents "My father was killed by a god... My mother, sister, everyone I loved was killed by a god.", and similarly in Rapunzel, the prince was determined to find Rapunzel, so much so that even after he goes blind “he roamed about in misery …show more content…
In Clash of the Titans, Andromeda is the vulnerable princess whom Hades wants to kill, to punish Argos for their defiance against the gods, unless they offer her as a sacrifice. “Unless you sacrifice the princess you so foolish compare to the gods”. Andromeda is helpless and she has nowhere to run or hide, because Hades has succeeded in turning some of the people in Argos against the princess and they are ready to sacrifice her in order to save the city. On the other hand, Rapunzel is the damsel in distress in her story, she is taken by the enchantress due to her parents stealing from her garden. The enchantress takes Rapunzel when she is born to a tower far away with no doors and can’t be reached by anyone. She locks her in there and separates her from the world. Both of the princesses needs a hero who would save them from their suffering and distress. They’re also both in those rough situations because of someone else’s actions and not their own, Rapunzel’s father stealing from the enchantress and Argos’ rebellions against the gods. They don’t have many differences except that Andromeda is on the verge of dying right before the hero saves her while Rapunzel just lives a miserable

Anyone who is successful in completing a gallant and courageous act, can be considered a hero. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is an admirable hero because he uses strategy instead of strength to overcome several obstacles. Homer presents this in Odysseus’s use of deception, the route he chooses to get home, his choice of words and his use of disguises. To overcome a hurdle one may wish for a great deal of strength. Yet when Odysseus came in contact with a giant Cyclops, he never questioned nor focused on his lack of vitality.…

They play important key roles in developing the plot, theme and conflicts of a story. Without archetypes there wouldn’t be the stereotypical protagonist hero character coming to save the day in today's movies and books. Throughout history archetypes have been roughly the same, a protagonist and an antagonist but the way they have been used has been distinctly different through time. The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…
