Archbishop Romero: A Positive Effect On The People Of El Salvador

Superior Essays
Register to read the introduction… Archbishop Romero overall had a positive effect on the people of El Salvador although he wasn’t well liked by some people also. The negative affect Romero had on some people is visible when Oscar Romero was named Archbishop. It states that “not everyone was happy with Romero’s naming. For some priests and others who had pondered the new direction given the church by Vatican II and the pronouncements of the Latin American bishops at Medellin in 1968, Romero seem wedded to the old ways and his ordination an assertion of the triumphalism that Vatican II had renounced”(Brockman 38). Basically, there were people who weren’t sure that Romero was the right person to be the Archbishop, he didn’t appeal to everyone because he was to set in his old mannerisms. His positive effect on other is visible after Romero has been assassinated. The morning after Romero had died, 5,000 people accompanied him in the procession of his body to the cathedral and crowds of people filed past the body in the cathedral for the rest of the week (Brockman 220). Archbishop Romero must have had a real big impact on the Salvadorian population in order for them to respond in this manner after he passed …show more content…
He had a way of understanding and relating to the society he was a part of and this might be due to the way in which he was raised which was in a very humble, typical style. He could relate to those who he was reaching out to help. Other types of intelligences he had were emotional intelligence because he could empathize with the people and also verbal intelligence because he had an excellent use of words to get his point across as is evident in his homilies and letters. Overall, Oscar Romero’s intelligence played an important role on his self concept and his relationship with …show more content…
He wanted to achieve this ultimate goal by reaching out and informing people of the injustices in hopes of being heard and making a difference. The conflict he was faced with was that his own church, some of the bishops, was going against what he was doing. They thought he was bringing unnecessary controversy to the church by speaking out against the war and he thought he was doing the right thing. He had to decide whether to follow his peers and go against his will or go with his will and go against his peers. He ended up trying to explain to his peers his point of view but that didn’t work so in the end he ended choosing what he felt was right. Oscar Romero was forever changed from the instance that he heard the sermon given by the priest from his town. After that he was set in his mind that he was going to be a priest and help people. Also I think that going back to El Salvador after having been in Rome for a while might have had an impact in the type of religious leader that Oscar Romero was. He has to accommodate based on his surroundings so during that time, his surroundings were going through a tough time. I feel that perhaps the death of many colleagues or even of just men with the same profession as him (priests) might have affected why e felt so strongly about the war in El Salvador. Not only was the injustice wrong but also the murders that were occurring,

Sandra Cisneros, an author who is deeply inspired by her Mexican American heritage. This inspiration is clearly shown throughout each and every one of her writing pieces, such as “Salvador Late or Early”, as well as “Eleven”. Both short-stories focus on adolescents with a mature mindset and adult precision, and each story does a marvelous job portraying Cisneros constant writing style. “Salvador Late or Early” is focusing on a young boy, Salvador, with heavy burdens to carry on his shoulders, which is unfortunate because he is such a young boy with an old soul. Cesar Chavez voiced his opinion on why society should choose a nonviolent response instead of violent in a religious article on the tenth anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. As a labor union organizer and civil rights leader, Chavez understands how the use of nonviolence is powerful by experiencing the effects of peaceful protests to get a message across and attaining effective change without having to resort to violence. Chavez reaches out to his audience by stating that the epitome of an amicable life is that of a one that follows a non violent system of reasoning. He demonstrates his argument by using examples that are understanding to those who live in poverty and uses pronouns such as “we” to create a bond between his audience and himself in a means to inform others of nonviolence resistance. Chavez uses rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos to justify his argument on the opposition towards…

Through nonviolent protest, the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s achieved the most important breakthrough in equal rights legislation and fought against racial discrimination. Ten years subsequent to Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination and in a form of honor, Cesar Chavez, a labor union organizer and civil rights leader, delivered his speech in 1978, “He Showed Us The Way,” in time where equality for African-Americans was overlooked. Due to a rise of hatred and conflict between those who fought for civil rights and the government, Chavez attempts to prove that nonviolence is the better alternative compared to violence in resolving conflicts. Chavez makes it appear that nonviolence triumphs violence and leaves little to no doubt…

The Effect of Cesar Chavez’ farm work movement of labor, race, and immigration policies in the United States was that people found Cesar a role model and people also became fans. When the Grape and Delano March happened it was for the workers that were not getting support, so says Cesar Chavez. This was making immigrants struggle. I personally think this might have changed these citizens' lives and made them have a fair life as others that did not struggle and were not immigrants. These events took place in many areas and it drew people's attention, they soon did join to help and win these strikes.…
