Archbishop Mitty Library

When you arrive at the library at the beginning of your off-period, you expect to leave about an hour later with a significant amount of work accomplished and with seldom left to do that night. However, in the library, there are people with the goal to cause a ruckus and prevent everyone around them from getting their work done. During the period, the librarian yells at least ten times about how loudly everyone is talking and how if the volume is not lowered, silent study will begin. You leave the library with not as much done as you had hoped. Thankful for the brief moments of silence, you proceed to your next class. Through my experience in the Archbishop Mitty library, I have learned that there are three different causes for these disturbances: …show more content…
The reason they enter the library is to prevent others from concentrating. They are constantly trying to enrage everyone else in the library. Some Troublemakers accomplish their goal by playing dog whistles. They take advantage of the fact that the librarians cannot hear the high-pitched noises and that it is almost impossible to distinguish exactly where the sound originated. Some Troublemakers play music straight from their iPad. They put themselves at risk being asked to leave the library because it is relatively easy to find the source of the disruption. It is clear who caused the sound when everyone is staring at the same person. While their motive sets Troublemakers apart from average students in the library, there are other qualities that differentiate their group from the others.
A Troublemaker can be immediately distinguished when silent study begins. When the librarian makes their declaration that the period of working in silence is beginning, they acknowledge the fact that the they will be asked to leave if they continue to talk noisily. Therefore, they resort to discrete methods of disruption. This includes dramatically coughing and sneezing. The dog whistles continue distract students as they either try to block them out or silently try to figure out who is producing them. When enough people become fed up with their behavior, The Troublemakers are reported and are asked to

But rather than detention or the principal's office, his teacher sent him here, to Robert W. Coleman Elementary School's meditation room. And at Coleman -- just blocks from where people took to the streets after the death of Freddie Gray last year -- more than 80% of students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Staffers employed with the Holistic Life Foundation, the nonprofit behind Coleman's Mindful Moment Room, say they occasionally work with students whose parents are incarcerated.…

In the story Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury symbolizes the library as a death trap for the Dust Witch which expresses her fragility. This can be seen through, “The Witch toppled forward”(Bradbury223), “The Witch pulled back the merest quarter inch as if some strange but hidden electric light socket, touched with wet whorl, gave shock” (228), and, “ ‘ No!’ The Witch protested”(229). The library acting like a safe haven for the Halloway’s and Jim causes the Dust Witch to be fragile on such safe grounds because she is used to having the upper hand. The library makes her fragile because she isn’t used to being somewhere where she doesn't succeed in her duties.…

This is much like the way that Russia’s government, during the Cold War, kept people quiet who had an opinion that they didn’t agree with. In the story, a minute radio broadcaster was placed into citizens ears to prevent them from thinking but for short bursts at a time. This was assigned to those who had an advanced intelligence. The broadcaster would make tormenting sounds such as 21 gun salutes, milk jugs clattering, buzzers, etc., causing people, at times, to fall over. In the scene where George and Hazel Bergeron are watching ballerinas dance on the television, a sound is broadcasted, and affects George, and some of the ballerinas, so badly that “Two of the eight ballerinas had collapsed to the studio floor, were holding their temples.”…

McLean’s English classroom, I was immediately greeted by shouts of joy and hoots from the students in the class, and it took about 5 minutes to get the students’ undivided attention. The desks of the students were set up independently and positioned to face the board of the classroom which showed a body paragraph that the class was writing as a whole. The learning taking place in the classroom was very interactive and very much guided by Ms. McLean’s analysis of the book. It was surprising to see students wearing headphones and using their electronics in class; something like that would have triggered a social drama back when I attended BLA (Turner, 1976). The breach, which does not always escalate to a crisis, would have been identifying a student using headphones and/or a cellphone during class.…

In the essay “The Dog Ate My Disk, an Other Tales of Woe” Professor Carolyn Foster Segal explains that even after lengthy syllabus warnings and a humorous cartoon of a cat explaining to its teacher that a dog ate its homework, students still came up with multiple excuses for being tardy, absent or turning in assigned work late. She categorized the excuses into these five categories, the family, the best friend, the evils in dorm life, the evils in technology, and the totally bizarre. For family, Segal points out that “The death of the grandfather/grandmother is, of course, the grandmother of all excuses” (565). Students will use that excuse all the time because the teacher will probably show pity for them in their sorrow. Demonstrating…

I would love to attend Archbishop Mitty High School because of all the wonderful things I experienced during 7th day, shadowing, and open house. From the start, I knew that Mitty was the school right for me. I have always felt very comfortable walking on campus because I know so many people, and I know how every staff member is so friendly and full of hospitality. On seventh grade day, I got to look around the school, try the lunches, and was told lots about Mitty by the wonderful and caring staff. I enjoyed the rush of Monarch Madness.…

Many aspects of campus expansion and policies had great benefits, but nevertheless held oppositions as well. The Davis Library was a new, innovated, resource for the students. On the other hand, there were complaints of the library being abused, specifically by undergraduate students (Richards, 1984b, p. 8). This ultimately led to several specific instances of banning undergraduates from the library, written shortly after its opening. Mary Margaret Richards, a graduate student in the English department claims that undergraduate students were frequently “hanging over the balcony screaming to friends below, holding noisy social hours, making out in the study lounges and enjoying the thrill of sneaking contraband Coke, which they then spill on the books and carpet.”…
