Arcadia University Personal Statement

Improved Essays
My zeal for undertaking the Modular Master’s Degree program at Arcadia University is to develop my skills and expand my knowledge of educating children in preparation for a career as an educator. My interest in teaching began four years ago after completing my undergraduate degree in Public Health and has since developed after my first motherhood experience. My commitment to pursuing a career as an educator was established during my maternity leave, where I had time to reflect on going back to school. I was mostly inspired by my family’s ardor for education and by the encouragement of the executive director at my job who wishes to mentor me into the leadership world of Early Childhood

Toddler behavior and development are key components in how children learn. Toddlers are mainly ego-centric beings that are grasping the skills of empathy, as well as other social skills. As educators, we have to plant the seeds of how children respond to stimuli in their environment. Being in Toddler Practicum really shows me these accomplishments. I interacted with Toddlers that practiced sharing.…

My fieldwork focused on early childhood education, specifically kindergarten and second grade. Being able to observe those two grade levels helped me to solidify my desire to be a teacher. At the end of my observations, I was able to determine where I felt most comfortable; where I found my niche. I came to the conclusion that I preferred to focus my attention to kindergarten rather than any other grade level in early childhood education. Even though they were two different grade levels, the techniques used in the classroom were either the same or similar.…

I loved psychology, even before I was aware of what it was. As far back as I can recall, I have been compelled to understand how others thought. My siblings and I have radically different forms of thought so I learned early on that, even when coming from similar backgrounds, each person thinks and thus behaves differently. This interest coalesced with my academic fervor once I reached college through the subject of psychology. While my knowledge has advanced greatly under my undergraduate education, my thirst for knowledge remains unquenched.…

From reading over the handouts given to me from every student in class, I was able to pull several similarities and differences out from the seventeen interviews. A significant difference that I took away from this assignment was the differences early care/preschool educators versus those who teach in primary public school grades. Early care/preschool educators focus more on the aspect of cognitive, social, and academic skills that children develop from birth to about age five. Children are at their basis of learning in early care/preschool, they are still learning their alphabet and are becoming acquainted with being in a classroom setting. While primary public school grade educators take the knowledge that children have learned previously…

When I graduated from Washington Sate University in 2012, I left with a network of life long friends, a double major in Psychology and Sociology title added to my resume, as well as the desire to learn and explore outside of the classroom. I traveled throughout Thailand and Bali, becoming inspired by yoga and the art of meditation. Returning home I engulfed myself in a demanding spiritual and physical training course, earning my certificate as a Registered Yoga Teacher. Then moved to St. John, VI; four thousand miles from the support system at home, into a culture entirely new to myself. There I forged a new network of friends, built a new home, and truly learned that I am capable of taking any challenges life throws at me and conquering…

Conversely, in an early childhood study examining the impact of early childhood teacher qualifications as a predictor of quality instruction among teachers of 4 year olds, more than education alone, providing effective professional opportunities in conjunction with increased education provides positive results for children (Early, Maxwell, Burchinal, Bender, Ebanks, Henry, Iriondo-Perez, Mashburn, Pianta, Alva, Bryant, Cai, Clifford, Griffin, Howes, Jeon, Pesner-Feinberg, Vandergrift, & Zill, 2007, p. 577). As my field work at Carter Elementary comes to an end, I can honestly say that nothing better prepares you for working with children than doing just that. No matter how many hours I sit in UTSA’s lecture halls and classrooms, or study the socially just and proper way to respond to each situation, it will never be more beneficial that being in an actual kindergarten class for two hours a week. As we progressed in IDS 2013, I was eager to visit my students in Mrs. Ferguson’s class and witness what I had been learning about in action. I walked out of her class each day having been taught a valuable lesson and understanding myself as a teacher a little bit better. Since my field work was at the same time each week, I would almost always arrive…

Throughout this semester I have had the privilege to observe and work with the students at Kensington day care. This experience has allowed me to plan my own lessons and interact with the children on a weekly basis where they would take the material taught to and expand these ideas. The children were taught a new item or learned about a new experience for each mini lesson that I taught. The basic lesson planned for the children that occurred every morning would subsume explaining the weather, days of the week, months of the year and the alphabet.…
