THE ARAVIND EYE HOSPITAL
The Aravind Eye Hospital was established in 1976 by Dr. Govindappa Venkataswsamy. Dr. G. Venkataswamy started the hospital with one goal to provide quality eye care at reasonable cost. He started a hospital with 20-beds in Madurai, India and now owns seven hospitals with 4,000 beds in total. He achieved this through adopting the characteristics of fast food restaurants in America. George Ritzer named this process of adopting characteristics of a fast food restaurant as "McDonaldization" in his book The McDonaldization of Society.
Dr. G. Venkataswamy graduated with a bachelor's degree in medicine from Madras University in 1944. He was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi to serve his country and he did so by joining The Indian

But the main reason behind his success was his smart use of a sociological phenomenon called McDonaldization.
McDonaldization is described as "The process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as of the rest of the world."(George Ritzer, 2004). George Ritzer has named this process after the great fast food chain called McDonald's. According to him, organizations which use McDonaldization have succeeded because they offer consumers, workers and managers efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. And thus making efficiency, calculability, predictability and control the four main dimensions of

Efficiency is defined as the optimum method of doing any work. Aravind group of hospitals is a very efficient organization. Dr.G.Venkataswamy achieved this by designing an innovative "assembly" line system for surgery. Patients are prepared for surgery in groups by ophthalmic assistants doing most of the preparatory work so that the surgeons could focus on the surgery. When the operation is completed, the supplies are quickly refurbished as the next patient is brought in the room. The treated patients are transported to the recovery room. Each operating room, except those rooms used for complicated operations, have two or three operating tables as a way of efficiently utilizing the supporting staff. Each operating table had multiple sets of instrument and support staff to ensure that the waiting time between surgeries was nearly zero. The same principle is used for the outpatient examination: support staff carry out all the routine diagnostic procedures. The ophthalmologist performs only those tasks that require clinical judgment based on their medical knowledge. This process doesn't just enhances the utilization of the resources but also improves the quality of the treatment. This makes Aravind the most efficient hospital in the world. So while the average ophthalmologist in India performs 400 surgeries a year, at Aravind a doctor performs about 2,000 surgeries a year. That is

Leidner wrote a book, Fast Food Fast Talk: Service work and the routinization of everyday life, in which she worked in and observed working life in a McDonalds and compared it to an insurance company. Her book focused on the routinization of service jobs and its effect on the people working, the customers consuming the product, and the effect it has on the company. This paper focuses on a McDonalds in the Southside of Jacksonville, FL and how it compares to the observations made in Leidner’s book. Going into this project, there were not many expectations made about what to expect in the McDonalds observed. The following are the expectations that were kept in mind while the field observations, discussed later in this paper, were conducted.…

Many people have limited knowledge on how their beloved chain restaurants came to be. Likewise, I know that I don’t wonder about the persons who started the movement of fast food chain restaurants when I am in a drive thru picking up my Big Mac. The movie “The Founder” by John Lee Hancock decided to unmask the history and the drama involved in founding McDonald’s. However, while many see the McDonald’s today as a wholesome and family friendly restaurant, they do not know the underhanded dealings that occurred in order for McDonald’s to become the global sensation it is today.…

There many policies, regulations and social structure that influence the organization at The University Eye Clinic (UEC). These policies are embedded in the core principles by complying with the State University of New York City, The Department of Education, The Department of Health as well as The National Association of Social Work (NASW), and the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW). Therefore, without these policies and regulations, UEC would not comply to be an organization. Equally important to UEC is that this organization is not only a clinic; it is also a teaching facility where they trained optometry students. With the collaboration of the Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare, they also trained graduate-level…

There are four main points of McDonaldization; efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. Efficiency places an importance on time and cost and using as little of both as possible whatever the outcome is. Calculability has to do with the quantity of an item or how much it costs and how much emphasis is put on it. When there is attention brought to the quantity then it’s very possible that the quality will be lacking due to less time being spent on an individual order. Predictability has to do with the consistencies carried across many fast chains.…

McDonaldization Christopher Rivers DeVry University McDonaldization Let’s take a few seconds to think about how McDonaldization has made your life better. For example; online shopping, self-checkout, online education, communication, and even the way we travel. Even though McDonaldization costs thousands of people their jobs, McDonaldization helps businesses thrive because it’s far less expensive, with more control means there’s fewer human errors, and more is done in lesser time. McDonaldization is a term use by sociologist, George Ritzer in his book titled The McDonaldization of Society (1993).…

Just like what was mentioned in a case study conducted by Albert Felix Imahsunu, in manufacturing industries, the focus of production control is on the flow of materials. However, in hospitals and other similar institutions, the most important process is the flow of patients, while the flow of materials is secondary. Imahsunu further explained that production control has specific requirements that the factory has to follow to make the end-products and a set schedule for the delivery, whereas for the healthcare industries, there is rarely a fixed standard for product specifications. Not only do the highly trained professionals (medical specialists) generate requests for service, but they are also involved in delivering the service (Imahsunu, 2014, p. 16). Also, medical care is not something that can be stocked and put as…

Complimentary practices such as Obstetrics and Gynecology could share a department, which is the essence of efficiency and falls in line with the Operations Management functions, and is even more important with service oriented operations. Service Operations are those functions that are created at the time the customer arrives, and can’t be produced before their arrival (Sanders, 2012). These services can be less predictable, and the time to provide the required service is different for each individual. Because time is the variable, it is important in the case of hospital layout to adequately provide space for patients and providers since the variable of time can affect how long a patient waits before receiving treatment, and the wait time between initial treatment and discharge of the patient with services…

The advantages that one could see in McDonaldization in today’s modern society is how quickly a task can be done, so customers get the food they predictability want and get onto the next task they have for their busy life. Furthermore, to achieve predictability, a rationalized society emphasizes discipline, order, routine, and consistency operations. Which in return offers control over the situation or people. A disadvantage of McDonaldization would be the quality of the product, because fast-food restaurants simplify products. For example, instead of using healthier food, the company will buy the cheapest food to cook faster meals.…
