Harriet Tubman lead groups from the Eastern shore of Maryland and in Delaware. “The Underground Railroad, a vast network of people who helped fugitive slaves escape to the North and to Canada, was not run by any single organization or person” (Slavery 1). It was run by many individuals, mostly freed blacks. It moved hundreds of slaves to freedom each year. Harriet Tubman was said to have made at least nineteen trips and helped 300 slaves. She put herself in great danger each trip and there were rewards for her capture. Many slaves got scared and wanted to run back. Harriet knew that if she allowed them to run back it would put her and others who were trying to escape from danger. She carried a gun and was known to pull it out on people wanting to turn back.
