At a young age he is vulnerable to being used by a “cute” girl. Every step this boy took it was one step closer to losing himself and becoming this girl’s pet. From the “Araby” the girl has realized that his love for her has become obsessive. She begins noticing him running past her every morning, and his childish mannerisms once seen as a crush. This gave the girl opportunity to obtain gifts or other aspects from him without any commitment. He had fallen in love with a girl whose toxicity eventually hurt the boy. The love she had “gave” him made him realize the only way to obtain such a beauty would be to give her a gift back. It was not just the feeling of love that made him confused, but the feeling of inadequacy, the internal debate of if he truly loves her, and the struggle to obtain not just a gift, but to obtain his actual love for this girl. This boy feels inadequate or inferior, due to his age, and her beauty. He has never stated her name maybe because even the thought of the name can spook the idea of never going to be good enough. The idea that he may be in love with her is elementary. This girl could be a figment of his imagination. He refers to her a lot as a black outline or a shadow across the street. This gives the interpretation that he may even be gay; and this “girl” of his imagination is him trying to obtain his sexuality. The girl being a shadow could mean he was in a dark place and could not see the whole picture. He had not been able to see her because he did not want to. This boy attempted to explore his sexuality by obsessing over a “girl.” This girl in fact, could be his cry for help. He does not know what to do when it comes to impressing her, or figuring out what she would like. When he could not obtain the gift he had finally come to the realization that his “obsession” with this girl was actually manifested while he was trying to deal with his inner struggle of being
