Aqueous Solutions To Displace Magnesium

Decent Essays
Revisiting the results, it could be organized into a small incomplete activity series of metals. Magnesium would be first since it reacts with all the aqueous solutions and displaces their metals to create a reaction. Second metal in this activity series would be aluminum. The reason for this is because aluminum displaced all the aqueous solutions except the one that contains magnesium. This proves that magnesium is more reactive than aluminum, putting aluminum under magnesium. Third on this list would be zinc. Zinc also displaced certain aqueous solution but did not displace any aqueous solution that contains magnesium or aluminum. Tin is next on the list since it displaced all the aqueous solutions except the ones that contained zinc, aluminum

For this experiment, a group was employed by the Environmental Protection Agency as analytical chemists. Their goal was to identify an unknown compound that has been discovered in a landfill in their hometown. Once they identified the compound, they would then have to determine both the chemical and physical properties of the compound in order to inform the townspeople of any potential dangers. During the first week of lab, the group was given a small bottle containing an unknown white crystal-like substance.…

Another element correctly placed was, unknown #5, Gold. Gold was placed in group 11 because we observed its color (gold) and that it is soft just like Silver and Copper. Gold could not be placed in group 1 because group 1 elements “react with water to make alkaline solutions” (127) and gold is not so reactive. Gold could also not be placed in group 18 because most elements of that group “have a full set of electrons in their outermost energy level”…

Magnesium Chloride as a Deicer Emily Lekah Fall 2015 CHEM 1066 October 15, 2015 University of Minnesota Abstract The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate magnesium chloride as a deicer. To be a good deicer, a salt must be able to lower the enthalpy when is mixed with water. This will cause an exothermic reaction and release heat.…

In this experiment, solid magnesium is used with hydrochloric acid to produce magnesium (II) chloride and hydrogen gas. The gas is measured with an inverted graduated cylinder. Solid magnesium was under the cylinder while HCI are poured from a funnel into the cylinder to perform the reaction where hydrogen gas is trap inside the graduated cylinder. The average molar volume of hydrogen gas at STP is 20.839 L/mole for the experiment, which is about 6.97% off from the true value. One potential error could be from the funnel.…

My hypothesis was rejected. There hadn't been several chemical changes, as I predicted. There had only been chemical changes in color shown in the data table. In row B, there had been a light blue, cloudy color change. In row C, there had been a slight green color change, which should have had a chemical reaction, and remained a clear color.…

Introduction: In this laboratory, free-radical halogenation was used in order to brominate compounds such as toluene, ethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene and t-butylbenzene (structures as seen below). Free-radical halogenation consists of a halogen, connected through sigma bonding, breaking and interacting with the side chain of the aromatic compound. The three steps in the process of halogenation take place in the presence of light and are labeled as initiation, propagation and termination. Initiation being the breaking of the sigma bond between the diatomic halogen, propagation being the interaction of hydrogen, carbon and the radical itself, and termination which is the recombination of stable molecules.…

In today’s day and age it is very easy to access foods with magnesium. For example, you can simply walk into Metro and buy green vegetables, whole grain cereals, nuts and beans, and seafood. We have the privilege to go to a pharmacy and simply buy supplement to help us improve our intake of magnesium. Some additional food items that maintain magnesium are mackerel, boiled spinach, bran breakfast cereal and almonds. Foods with the highest magnesium per milligram are cocoa, bran breakfast cereal, almonds, cashews and pumpkin seeds.…

Reacting the unknown compound with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) produced no visible reaction (precipitate), although the pH of the resulting solution was very acidic. Combining the unknown compound with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), a strong base, also had no visible reaction. However, the resulting solution was a lot more basic. Reacting the unknown compound with sodium nitrate (NaNO3), a salt, did not have a visible reaction nor did the pH of the resulting solution change.…

For example at station one, barium chloride reacted with silver nitrate yielding to barium nitrate and silver chloride. Barium nitrate is aqueous because all nitrates are soluble. Silver chloride is the precipitate because all chlorides expect silver and a few others are soluble, since silver is an exception silver chloride is insoluble. To determine which reactant out of the chemical reactions the solubility rules provided the guideline necessary to figure out which reactant is the precipitate. The reactions in this equation were all of the same type of chemical reaction.…
