Aquarius Festival Case Study

What is your topic?
The topic I have chosen to study is the Aquarius Festival held in Nimbin, NSW. The 9 day festival from May 12th to 21st 1973 may have been the best thing to happen to Nimbin. The dying dairy town in desperate need of business was approached by the Australian Union of students and asked to hold an alternative lifestyle festival on the showground of the town. Although the values of the conservative town members differed from the alternative festival attendees they agreed for the livelihood of the town.
Local businesses boomed and many of the Aquarians (festival attendees) decided to stay and live in the town. Nimbin is now seen as the countercultural capital of Australia (Garbutt 2014).
I will be exploring more about the event

It appears some community members felt that the festival attendee’s lifestyle choices such as smoking illegal substances and nudity did not match the conservative values of Nimbin townspeople. This is assumed as Bob Marsh addresses these concerns in his letter, reassuring the town that any distasteful behaviour will be dealt with firmly and will not be problematic to the town.

What has been included in the record and what might have been left out?
The record has included Bob Marsh’s thoughts on why the town should agree to host the 1973 Aquarius festival and how any violence will be dealt with by police thoroughly. The letter however has left out some important details about the event that may have affected the decision. The letter does not mention how long the festival goes for, how many students are planning on attending and what activities will take place during the festival.

What is the point of view being expressed?
Bob Marsh makes his point of view clear in the letter. He believes this festival will do great things for Nimbin and that the town would regret not taking this opportunity. There is no doubt or uncertainty in his response that he is in favour of the Aquarius festival being held in

This letter addresses concerns about the visitors exhibiting offensive behaviour in the town. It also brings attention to how this is a big economic opportunity for Nimbin. It was a big decision for the town to make which raises the question was it the right decision? The Aquarius lifestyle points away from local traditions and values (Four Corners 1973). The locals may have agreed at the time to the festival did they change their minds once they came in contact with the Aquarians?

Where would you go to find answers to those questions?
The best way to find these answers is to get in contact with some of the local residents from 1973. However, this could be challenging as I do not know if they are still in town because they embraced the lifestyle change or if they moved because they did not. Finding interviews and articles already complete of the towns reaction would be very useful and a more likely approach to finding the answers to my questions.

What is the relationship to your topic?
This particular primary source represents a critical moment in the history of Nimbin. If this letter was not presented on the night of the town meeting the community might not have agreed on hosting the Aquarius festival. Nimbin would be very different to the countercultural town it is today and perhaps still struggling

Already by the early 1990's an established tourism identity with experience as manager of the then celebrated Colonial Club, teaching tourism at Tafe, and working at Be Bee's in its early days, Bert Gerbrands dreamed of a truly special gay resort, something unique, secure, secluded, preferably seaside facing the famous Great Barrier Reef, and surrounded by lush tropical rainforest. In pursuit of that dream he drove the local roads looking for a location and talked to friends about investing in the venture, but he never found the right spot and, with virulently anti-gay Joh Bjelke-Petersen captaining the Queensland ship of state, no one dared dip their toe in that water. However once the Bjelke-Petersen government foundered, and the new Labor government decriminalised homosexuality, Bert saw his chance.…

Straight-backed, uniformed wait staff crisscrossed the floor of City Hall’s ballroom. With silver trays held aloft, they glided effortlessly through the crowd, their blank expressions cleverly masking the tedium of serving champagne and hors d'oeuvres to equally bored guests. Dozens of white-clothed tables adorned with elaborate arrangements of hydrangeas and magnolias gave refuge to the honored attendees who were either too tired or too disinterested to mingle with the men and women gathered in cliques throughout the room. From their position on a small raised platform, a string quartet provided a pleasant auditory backdrop to the chatter of voices, the dulcet tones swelling and falling like a warm summer breeze. It was the party event of the year, and for the mayor’s wife, the soirée was an opportunity to gain the enviable reputation of perfect hostess; for her guests, it was a grandiose display of autocratic superiority.…

You could spot some kids inclining against the superannuated building, grabbing a smoking before the morning bell rang. Most had withdrawn since it was a brumal Irish morning. “Here I go,” he muttered to himself pushing open the aged antediluvian burgundy door. As soon as he walked in he saw his group of friends strolling down the vestibule, immersed in their colloquy, probably discussing Dublin’s crushing defeat against Kerry in Gaelic football. He waved, calling their names as got closer “Jimmy! Ronnie!…

A Consumers Republic talks about mass suburbia with readings about the social and economic status that came with living in the suburbs. The chapter also speaks of keeping people of a certain economic or social class together in the late 1950s, while making sure not to let others in who could disrupt the white suburbia. Two major cities, Atlanta, Georgia and Compton, Los Angeles, were cities that both experienced “ White Flight” and the effects following soon after. In the 1950s, Compton was a white middle class inner city, and almost thirty years later the city was over run by drugs and controlled by many dangerous gangs.…

Anyone in Jamestown would be able to gaze at our numerous signs raising environmental awareness stapled to telephone poles around the island. My topic is over The Oregon Trail, it was a 2,200-mile east-west trail that served as a critical transportation route for emigrants traveling from Missouri to Oregon and other points west during the mid-1800s. Travelers were inspired by dreams of gold and rich farmlands, but they were also motivated by difficult economic times in the east and the diseases like yellow fever and malaria that were decimating the Midwest around 1836. The Oregon Trail began in St. Louis, Missouri, in early spring to begin the four- to six-month trek. This would be the last big city most would visit. Settlers loaded wagons and supplies onto steamships to travel 200 miles upstream on the Missouri River, departing when the river began heading north.…

In spite of how frequently he throws extravagant parties, they are often for strangers. When Nick arrives at one such party, he observes, “Sometimes [the guests] came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party with a simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission” (Fitzgerald 41). Fitzgerald’s use of juxtaposition contrasts well between the assumed demeanor of Gatsby’s wealthy and civilized guests, to how they are actually “conduct[ing] themselves according to the rules of behavior associated with an amusement park” (41). This implied childish behavior would be considered disrespectful at a high class party such as Gatsby’s, but as only a few guests have met their host, they feel free to act as they please. Nick also discerns, “In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whispering and the champagne and the stars” (Fitzgerald 39).…
